England’s possible route to Euro 2024 final, what days to book off work

England will look to reach another final at Euro 2024 this summer, and TBR Football checks out the Three Lions’ possible route so you know what days to book off work.

Coach Gareth Southgate guided England into their first major final since the 1966 World Cup three years ago. But penalty heartbreak at Wembley saw Italy beat the Three Lions for their second European Championship title. It was even the first time that England made the final.

Marcus Rashford missed from the spot before Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka in the Euro 2020 final. Italy could now become only the second country to secure back-to-back titles after Spain in 2008 and 2012 by winning in Germany this summer.

Germany and Spain are also the only three-time Euro champions and will start their bid for a fourth in Groups A and B in 2024. UEFA drew England in Group C, while Italy will launch their defence of the crown from the group of death – Group B – with La Roja, Croatia and Albania.

So, with that in mind, TBR Football has looked at the possible route England will take to the Euro 2024 final so you know what days to book off work to not miss a second of the action.

The possible route England will take to the Euro 2024 final

England will start what Southgate hopes is their route to the Euro 2024 final on June 16 with their opening Group C match. The Three Lions will then hope to play their last 16 tie on June 30 as group winners, which can lead to a quarter-final tie on July 6 and semi-final on July 10.

If England can only advance from Group C as the runners-up, their round of 16 tie would be on June 29. Their potential route to the final would also then see England play their quarter-final on July 5 and semi-final on July 9 in the hope of reaching the Euro 2024 final on July 14.

Southgate can also take England to back-to-back European Championship finals by ending Group C in third place. The Three Lions progressing with one of the best third-place records would see their last 16 tie fall on July 1, plus quarter-final on July 5 and semi-final on July 9.

UEFA drew England to play Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in Group C at Euro 2024. It will be the first time that the Three Lions have ever played Serbia in any competition. England have played Denmark and Slovenia previously and also have good records against both countries.

The BBC will broadcast England’s first group stage matches at Euro 2024 against Serbia and Denmark, with ITV showing the Three Lions’ game with Slovenia. ITV and the BBC will make their picks for the knockout rounds at a later point, with the final shown on both channels.

England last played Denmark in the semi-finals during their route to the Euro 2020 final and won 2-1. Saka drew an own goal from Simon Kjaer (39’) to equalise after Mikkel Damsgaard (30’) netted. Harry Kane (104’) won England the tie with a rebounded penalty in extra-time.

The Euro 2020 semi-final even gave England their 13th win over Denmark in 22 games. They have drawn five times and lost once since the nations first met in September 1948. England have also won in five and drawn six of their matches against Slovenia since September 2009.

  • Tuesday, June 25 – kick-off 20:00 BST: England vs Slovenia (Cologne) – ITV

England’s possible Euro 2024 round of 16 tie

The round of 16 at Euro 2024 will feature the two top sides from the six groups plus the four top-ranked third-placed countries. Should England win Group C, they will meet one of those third-placed sides. But the Three Lions can only get a third-place side from Groups D, E or F.

Finishing second in Group C, on the other hand, would see England challenge the winners of Group A in Dortmund. Group A features the host nation Germany plus Hungary, Switzerland and home nations rival, Scotland – who have made their first major competition since 1998.

If England can only reach the round of 16 as one of the best-ranked third-placed countries, a knockout stage tie with the winners of Group F awaits Southgate’s side in Frankfurt. Group F will feature Portugal, Czech Republic, Georgia and Turkey and will be the last group to finish.

Group D is among the groups of death at Euro 2024 as UEFA drew the Netherlands, France, Poland and Austria together. UEFA has also drawn Ukraine, Slovakia, Belgium and Romania in Group E. But England could have to wait until Group F concludes on June 26 at 20:00 BST.

  • OR Saturday, June 29 – 20:00 BST: Group A 1st vs Group C 2nd (Dortmund)
  • OR Sunday, June 30 – 17:00 BST: Group C 1st vs Group D/E/F 3rd (Gelsenkirchen)
  • OR Monday, July 1 – 20:00 BST: Group F 1st vs Group A/B/C 3rd (Frankfurt)

England’s possible Euro 2024 quarter-final

England will either play in game 37, 40 or 41 during the round of 16 of Euro 2024 depending on where they finish in Group C. The Three Lions will play game 37 as the runners-up, game 40 as the winners or 41 if they make the knockout round as one of the top third-place sides.

Playing in game 37 will also see England advance to play in game 45 of Euro 2024 if they get into the quarter-finals. A date with destiny in game 48 will await if England play in game 40, while going via game 41 would see the Three Lions feature in game 46 in the quarter-finals.

  • OR Game 45: Friday, July 5 – kick-off 17:00 BST: W39 vs W37 (Stuttgart)
  • OR Game 46: Friday, July 5 – kick-off 20:00 BST: W41 vs W42 (Hamburg)
  • OR Game 48: Saturday, July 6 – kick-off 17:00 BST: W40 vs W38 (Dusseldorf)

England’s possible Euro 2024 semi-final

England’s possible route to the Euro 2024 final would see Southgate’s squad head to Munich or Dortmund for the semi-finals. The Three Lions will play in game 49 at the home of Bayern Munich if they win game 45 or 46, or go to Borussia Dortmund’s home if they win match 48.

Playing in Munich would also give England an extra day’s rest ahead of the Euro 2024 final if they make back-to-back finals. Game 49 of the tournament takes place 24 hours before the other semi-final tie. The Three Lions would then get four full rest days off rather than three.

  • OR Game 49: Tuesday, July 9 – kick-off 20:00 BST: W45 vs W46 (Munich)
  • OR Game 50: Wednesday, July 10 – kick-off 20:00 BST: W47 vs W48 (Dortmund)

UEFA scheduled the Euro 2024 final for Sunday, July 14 and kick-off at the Olympiastadion in Berlin is scheduled for 20:00 BST. The Olympiastadion will boast a capacity of 71,000 fans for the Euro 2024 final and it is the biggest stadium hosting any ties during the tournament.

The winner in game 49 of Euro 2024 will earn home designation for the final having won the first of the semi-finals, with the winners from game 50 receiving the role of the away finalist. England were the designated away team in the Euro 2020 final, despite it being at Wembley.

The Euro 2024 final also takes place on effectively the same weekend of the year as the Euro 2020 showpiece. Wembley held Italy’s win over England on penalties in the Euro 2020 final on July 7, 2021. The Euro 2020 final also kicked off at 20:00 BST, like the Euro 2024 final will.

Fans can watch the Euro 2024 final live on TV in the UK through the BBC or ITV. Additionally, ITV will stream all of the broadcasters’ games throughout Euro 2024 live via ITVX, STV and STV Player. The BBC will also make its selection of Euro 2024 games available via the iPlayer.
