Report: Newcastle are really interested in signing ‘powerful’ centre-back who’s wanted by Ange Postecoglou

Newcastle United reportedly ‘really like’ a centre-back who’s been targeted by Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies will be gearing up for a busy summer transfer window after a positive end to the season for Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League with a final-day victory at Brentford.

Howe’s men will play Europa Conference League football next season but their current campaign technically isn’t over just yet.

They have travelled to Melbourne to face Tottenham in a post-season friendly and according to Tutto Juve, Newcastle could rival Spurs for the signing of Riccardo Calafiori.

Newcastle ‘really like’ Tottenham target Riccardo Calafiori

Spurs have been heavily linked with a summer swoop for Calafiori, who has impressed in Serie A this season.

The 22-year-old has had a hand in seven goals while operating at centre-back as well as left-back.

Spurs are reportedly readying a move for the Italian defender, with Postecoglou keen to bolster his defensive options.

Now, Tutto Juve claims that Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen are also both keen. Yet, the report also states that Calafiori would prefer to remain in Italy should he leave Bologna, with Juventus showing strong interest.

Calafiori would be a brilliant option for Newcastle or Spurs

Given his ability to play as a left-back, Calafiori seems like an ideal signing for both Newcastle and Spurs.

Tottenham have struggled when Destiny Udogie has been unavailable this season, while Newcastle have had real issues when it comes to defensive depth.

Howe has been hugely unfortunate with injuries this term and Calafiori would provide a quality option capable of providing cover on the left-hand side.

Nevertheless, it would appear that the ‘powerful’ centre-back is keen to remain in Italy, which would make Juve favourites to land him.
