Chris Sutton assesses what the 'next challenge' will be for Brendan Rodgers at Celtic

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has managed to get his hands on the Scottish Premiership title after completing a remarkable return to Parkhead.

Despite not always having matters his own way, the Irishman’s side have lost just once in their last 24 fixtures, and could record a domestic double if they can defeat Rangers at Hampden on Saturday to win the Scottish Cup.

Kilmarnock dealt an early blow to Rodgers’ Scottish football comeback, knocking Celtic out of the Viaplay Cup in the second round at Rugby Park.

Meanwhile, the Hoops’ last involvement in the Champions League before the new format kicks in next season yielded four points from six matches against Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid and Lazio.

On matchday six, a late Gustaf Lagerbielke header gave Celtic their first victory at home in the competition for over ten years against Eredivisie opposition; nevertheless, two defeats to Lazio, a 6-0 drubbing against Atletico Madrid and losing out at De Kuip left a little bit of a bitter taste in the mouth.

Either way, lots of excitement is building ahead of changes to the competition being put into practice, and Rodgers’ men will be front and centre when all the action commences in September.

Chris Sutton on Brendan Rodgers’ next challenge at Celtic

You might know where I’m going with this, but Chris Sutton believes Rodgers’ ‘next challenge’ at Celtic after winning the Scottish Premiership is to make inroads in Europe, in line with the lofty expectations set by supporters.

Describing the Bhoys’ efforts in the Champions League this year as below the mark, he also indicated fans want to see an improvement on the continent, which will only be achieved by making one or two astute signings.

Sutton explained [Sky Sports]: “The supporters want to see the team challenge or make a better fist of European competition.

“This season, you have to say it was a disappointment. It was quite a gentle group Celtic were in in the Champions League, and to end up finishing bottom was unacceptable. I think that the club sat on their hands when they won the league last season. They had time to plan and weren’t ready for the Champions League.

“Without being too negative I think that was pretty much unforgivable.

“Celtic fans want to see their team competing in Europe again so that will be the next challenge. The rest of this season, it’s about making sure you win the Scottish Cup again.”

Chris Sutton has a point regarding Celtic’s European exploits

Sending a clear message to Celtic, Sutton delivered in typical fashion by not mincing his words about his old club, though some honesty could be a refreshing commodity as Rodgers looks to bolster the ranks.

Reports last night emerged claiming Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels is a target for the Hoops on a free transfer this summer, exemplifying the calibre of player the Irishman should be asking the question for this summer.

With a few savvy additions, Celtic could be well on their way to achieving good things in Europe, though fans will wait and see what transpires.
