'There had been whispers': The key Chelsea figure who wanted Mauricio Pochettino gone - journalist

Mauricio Pochettino officially departed Chelsea on Tuesday but was never sacked by the club.

However, it looks like at least one figure at Chelsea was not too keen on Mauricio Pochettino remaining at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine and his players had a good finish to the season, managing to secure sixth place and qualify for European football.

Things were starting to look promising for the Blues, who were finally starting to play well under Pochettino. They managed to win all of their last five games of the Premier League campaign.

Despite that, the 52-year-old decided to leave Chelsea by mutual consent. It has now been reported that the club are considering four managers who could replace the former Blues boss.

Which Chelsea figure had no problem with Mauricio Pochettino leaving?

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley run the football side of things at Chelsea, but co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are the final decision makers.

According to journalist Dean Jones, the latter got what he wanted following Pochettino and the club’s decision to part ways.

Jones claimed on X that “there had been whispers” that Eghbali wanted this outcome despite Chelsea’s improved form.

While Pochettino will not be at Chelsea next season, there is still a possibility of him remaining in England. Another journalist, Simon Phillips, recently reported that he has heard that Manchester United are keen on the former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Behdad Eghbali should have told Mauricio Pochettino to stay

Chelsea are probably not going to find a better manager than Pochettino this summer.

Someone who knows the Premier League so well, he ticked a lot of boxes.

Pochettino was also finally starting to get a tune out of the Chelsea players. After what had largely been a difficult season for the Blues, who spent most of it in mid-table, they were finally on the up under him towards the end of the campaign.

Ultimately, Eghbali should have been trying to convince Pochettino to stay, yet it looks like he did the opposite.
