Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl now in anxious wait over transfer target after latest injury blow

Sheffield Wednesday now face an anxious wait over Duncan McGuire, following this latest blow coming out of Orlando City.

Sheffield Wednesday have kept tabs on Orlando City striker McGuire, 23, following their failed January pursuit.

The Owls were locked in a deadline day battle with Blackburn Rovers to sign USMNT striker McGuire, though it was the latter who won the race.

Soon after though, McGuire would be back in the States after a paperwork error from Blackburn meant that the deal technically didn’t go through.

Recently, McGuire opened up on the comical mistake from Rovers, insisting that it would ‘take a lot’ for him to reconsider a move to Ewood Park.

McGuire though said that he’d be open to having a conversation with the club, suggesting that he’s open to leaving Orlando this summer with his current contract set to expire at the end of this year.

Duncan McGuire suffers injury with Orlando City

McGuire has started the 2024 MLS season in fine form, with five goals in 12 games so far this season.

But in Orlando’s last outing vs San Jose Earthquakes, McGuire was forced off after just 16 minutes with a shoulder injury.

After the game on Sunday morning, journalist Mike Gramajo posted on X: “McGuire wore a shoulder band throughout the game following his exit but looked in good spirits.

“No real updates. Will have to check back later in the week.”

Since, we’ve had no update on McGuire, which could hint at a potentially severe injury for the striker, which in turn could effect his chances of a big summer move to England.

Sheffield Wednesday are not alone in their interest of McGuire who also has interest from elsewhere in Europe.

Sheffield Wednesday face wait over Duncan McGuire injury

Expect officials at Sheffield Wednesday to know about McGuire’s injury, and expect them to be waiting nervously to find out the severity of it.

If it’s a serious one then it could prompt the Owls to cool their interest in McGuire and pursue a move for the likes of Ike Ugbo instead.

Danny Rohl will want someone who can come in and hit the ground running; if McGuire’s injury is serious then he’ll likely arrive in S6 injured, then need further time to get up to fitness, let alone up to grips with the style of play.

And the same could be applied with any team wanting to sign McGuire this summer, so the timing of his injury certainly isn’t ideal.

We should get an update on McGuire soon with his Orlando City side back in action against Columbus Crew in the MLS this Sunday.
