‘He slipped up’: Journalist shares update on Wolves decision to appeal Nelson Semedo red card v Liverpool

Wolves have now decided on whether to appeal Nelson Semedo’s red card against Liverpool.

The 2023/24 campaign ended as expected for Wolves as the Midlands club lost 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield on Jurgen Klopp’s final day.

Having won just one of their final 10 Premier League games in the 2023/24 season, the result didn’t come as a surprise to many although, the Old Gold put in a stellar effort on Merseyside.

If the fixture started in the second half, perhaps Gary O’Neil’s side would have secured a better result to end the campaign as first-half mishaps proved costly to the visitors.

In the 28th minute, right-back Nelson Semedo was shown a red card for a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister after VAR’s intervention to upgrade the on-field decision of a yellow.

The tackle has split opinion on whether it merited a dismissal, as O’Neil shared after the game that Wolves would decide whether to appeal, with the club’s decision now made.

Wolves decide not to appeal Nelson Semedo’s red card against Liverpool

Ian Wright branded the tackle ‘dangerous’ and believed it was a clear red card, while Sky Sports pundit Stephen Warnock shared opposing thoughts, saying that the dismissal was ‘harsh’.

It has now been revealed that Wolves have not appealed the red card that Semedo received, as relayed by journalist Liam Keen.

The Wolves expert explained on the E&S Wolves Podcast that the club ‘won’t be’ appealing the card, detailing that in reaction to the red card, O’Neil ‘slipped up’ with his views during the post-match press conference.

“Wolves have not appealed. Gary O’Neil said he thought it might be appealable in the press conference, I’ve checked, they haven’t appealed it, they won’t be appealing it.

“Gary’s been great in press conferences but he slipped up slightly because he said that he thought it was a strong yellow card that VAR shouldn’t be getting involved in, then said if the referee had given a red card on-field, he wouldn’t have expected VAR to overturn.”

Nelson Semedo will miss the start of 2024/25 due to suspension

The red card on the final day means that the Portugal international will now miss the first three games of the 2024/25 season, which is a big blow for O’Neil.

That is of course if the 30-year-old is still a Wolves player after the summer, with speculation building regarding his future at Molineux beyond the 2023/24 campaign.

It would be a great shame for the Old Gold to lose the former Barcelona defender, with the manager admitting he is ‘desperate’ for the right-back to remain at the club, coming as no surprise after his impressive displays over the season.

That being said, at Anfield, the red card may have been a relief for Semedo, who looked to be struggling to suppress Liverpool’s threat on the right side, ending the footballing calendar and potentially his Wolves career, on a low.
