Hickathrift House Care Home in Marshland St James brings the local community together with a spring fair

Staff, residents, relatives, and the local community came together to enjoy a Spring Fair held at a care home.

Hickathrift House care home in Marshland St James hosted a variety of activities throughout the day, including a book sale, games, a tombola, barbecue, over 15 local businesses and craft stalls.

There was also an entertainment company, KJ Entertainments, who provided face painting, balloon modelling, and singing, which were enjoyed by everyone who came to the event.

The home also hosted a car washing service named Auto Fusion Detailing which two 14-year-old entrepreneurs ran.

Staff and residents at Hickathrift House made everyone feel welcome and were delighted to see different generations having fun together.

Visitors enjoyed plenty of refreshments; a delicious barbecue and “mouthwatering salads” all washed down with plenty of tea and coffee prepared by the general manager, Paula Colman, who was hard at work making sure that a great time was had by all.

The Spring Fair also became the first official engagement of the newly elected Mayor of Wisbech, Sidney Imafidon, who attended.

He said: “I had the pleasure of visiting Hickathrift House today and meeting the residents, stallholders and visitors. A wonderful event bringing people together.”

Betty, Jean, and Barrie, three residents at Hickathrift House, were hosting the stalls and raising an incredible £522 with the barbecue.

The Residents’ Fund helps to create incredible experiences for residents and goes towards the life enrichment program at the home including outings, activities, and their celebrating life initiative, ‘Post A Wish’.

Joy, a Hickathrift House resident, said: “It was a lovely day. My family and friends came to enjoy the day with me, and seeing so many children enjoy themselves was marvellous.

“It was all down to the hard-working team at Hickathrift, and I thank them all so much.”

Paula Colman, said: “What a tremendous day and turnout. We are thankful for those who visited us on the day.

“It was lovely to see so many happy faces in and around the garden – it was really a day to remember for us and the residents. It was a resounding success.”

The Spring Fair was twice as large as the Hickathrift Summer Fair last year with additional stalls such as a car wash and charities.

Along with the rest of the team, activities coordinators Kat Colangelo and Emily Jackson were determined to make sure it was a success.

Kat, head of activities, said: “It has been so much fun organising this event, we’ve tried to ensure there was something for everyone and it’s been wonderful to see our residents enjoying the fun and fantastic atmosphere with family and friends.”
