League One newcomers now 'want' to sign 'unbelievable' Derby County player in summer transfer - journalist

Rotherham United are reportedly interested in signing an ‘unbelievable’ talent from Derby County this summer.

Derby County are gearing up for their return to the Championship after a two-year hiatus.

The Rams have just announced their released/retained list, with six first-team stars departing once their contracts expire in June.

Paul Warne ideally wanted to keep the core of his promotion-winning squad together but to realistically compete in the second tier, he had to make some cutthroat decisions.

Joe Wildsmith’s departure was the one that left supporters in a state of shock as the 28-year-old had just won the Golden Glove Award for keeping the most clean sheets in League One.

A total of 12 players were watching their contracts run down at Pride Park, including academy graduate Louie Sibley, who is currently in discussions over his future in Derbyshire.

Rotherham United ‘want’ to sign Derby County’s Louie Sibley

Sibley is currently discussing his future at Derby ahead of next season.

The 22-year-old settled into his role as a left wing-back towards the end of the campaign, producing two goals and three assists in his final 14 matches.

With his future currently undecided, speculation has emerged and League One newcomers Rotherham United are interested in the youngster.

According to journalist Darren Witcoop, Millers boss Steve Evans is eyeing up moves for Sheffield Wednesday duo Reece James and George Byers while Sibley’s name has also been mentioned.

Rotherham’s pursuit of the Englishman comes as no surprise as they are looking to bounce straight back into the Championship, though it seems unlikely Warne will let his man depart.

Louie Sibley will play a key role in the Championship

Derby wouldn’t be discussing Sibley’s future if they didn’t see him as an integral part of their plans in the Championship.

An extremely versatile player, who can operate as a left back, winger and attacking midfielder, he offers Warne multiple options and can save the Rams invaluable funds in the transfer market.

There have always been question marks over what this best position is, but in the absence of veteran Craig Forsyth and Callum Elder, Sibley flourished in the left wing-back role.

He amassed four big chances created and 0.7 key passes per game across 23 starts in League One, with the youngster showing outrageous efficiency down the left.

Pat Lyons, a former under 23s coach at Derby, previously described Sibley as “unbelievable” and his performances towards the latter stages of the campaign certainly lived up to that praise.

Sibley made 67 appearances during his last spell in the Championship under Wayne Rooney. He’s now a couple of years older and showing signs of living up to his potential.

Derby would love for him to continue his development at Pride Park, so it will be interesting to see whether he agrees on a new deal, which would certainly fight off interest.
