Danny Rohl will surely discover fate of key Sheffield Wednesday target after this weekend - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl may know a lot more about one of their summer transfer targets after this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday have a lot of plates spinning right now; the future of Rohl, his contract and several player contracts, and plans for the summer transfer window.

The Owls recently released their retained list as they trim their squad ahead of the 2024/25 season, though Rohl doesn’t yet know the fate of several first-team players.

The likes of Di’Shon Bernard and Josh Windass are out of contract this summer. Both have been offered new deals but both have interest from elsewhere.

Whatever the case, Sheffield Wednesday will have plenty to do during the summer transfer window, which officially opens on June 14th.

But the Owls may know a lot more about the fate of Ian Poveda after this weekend.

Ian Poveda to Sheffield Wednesday latest

Sheffield Wednesday want to re-sign Leeds United loan man Poveda on a permanent transfer this summer.

He joined the Owls on deadline day in February and went on to feature 10 times in the Championship; he started eight of those 10, with Sheffield Wednesday winning six of the eight games that Poveda started.

The Colombian international failed to score and only grabbed one assist. But he rapidly became a fan favourite for his tricky performances in attack.

He’s also wanted by Burnley, Luton Town, and Sunderland ahead of his Leeds contract expiry next month, but the interested teams may know a lot more about Poveda’s future at Elland Road after the play-off final this weekend.

Leeds United play Southampton at Wembley on Sunday and if the Saints win, Poveda surely leaves as a free agent.

If Leeds win, however, it could make matters slightly more complicated, although a Leeds exit after four years still seems like the likeliest outcome.

Will Leeds United release Ian Poveda this summer

Former Manchester City starlet Poveda joined Leeds United in January 2020. But injury and loan exits has limited him to just 30 appearances in that time, with no goals and just the one assist.

Promotion to the Premier League would surely make Poveda surplus to requirements, though Daniel Farke may think twice about Poveda’s potential release if Leeds are playing in the Championship again next season.

Poveda featured seven times in the Championship under Farka in the first half of the season and after seeing how well he did with Wednesday, there could be a final chance for him at Leeds.

And if Leeds miss out on promotion then their attacking stars such as Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter will surely move on, potentially handing a lifeline to Poveda.

It’d obviously require a new contract offer from Leeds, and the likelihood remains that he leaves Elland Road as a free agent this summer.

But the fact that Poveda’s exit is yet to be confirmed suggests that Leeds United are just waiting to see what happens at Wembley this weekend.

Expect Sheffield Wednesday and others to keep a close eye on Poveda’s situation at the club.
