Gary Lineker says £67m Liverpool player simply made too many mistakes this season

Liverpool were once on track to lift the Premier League trophy in the most recent season, only to fall short in the final moments.

Manchester City were too strong in the end as they won the title, with Arsenal also overtaking the Reds to finish in second place.

Poor finishing was undoubtedly one of the major reasons behind Liverpool’s struggles in the end, but the Merseyside weren’t exactly in top shape at the back either.

Number one Alisson Becker did miss a large chunk of the season through injury, with his deputy Caoimhin Kelleher filling in.

The Republic of Ireland international did a fantastic job, but was forced back onto the bench upon Alisson’s return to full fitness.

Gary Lineker favours Jordan Pickford over Alisson

The Liverpool number one produced many important moments this season, but Gary Lineker still believes too many mistakes were made by the Brazilian.

For that reason and indeed the displays of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, Lineker has opted to choose the Toffees shot-stopper in his Premier League Team of the Season.

“I think he’s been unbelievable,” Lineker said of Pickford on The Rest Is Football podcast. “He’s a lot busier obviously than someone like David Raya.

“Ederson and Alisson are great, great goalkeepers, but they both made one or two mistakes this season. Pickford made 121 saves, compared with Raya’s 46, Ederson’s 57 and Alisson’s 83, which is quite a lot.”

Alisson still a vital player for Liverpool

Kelleher undoubtedly wowed Liverpool fans with his performances between the sticks when filling in for Alisson, who joined the Reds from Roma for £67million in 2018.

But the Brazilian is still on another level, and remains the club’s best player in that area, a viewpoint that Arne Slot will more than likely take upon his arrival at Anfield.

That does, however, generate uncertainty around the future of Kelleher, who may force his way out of Merseyside this summer in search of regular minutes on the pitch.

The best scenario for the new campaign would once again be having both top-class goalkeepers at Anfield.
