Seven things you missed from Tottenham vs Newcastle friendly in Australia

Tottenham faced Newcastle in a much-talked-about friendly in Australia, just a few days after the end of the Premier League season.

Both teams started strong lineups in front of the MCG crowd, which welcomed local hero Ange Postecoglou back to Australia.

The Spurs boss saw his side take the lead through James Maddison, as the playmaker’s impressive run beat several Newcastle players to fire home the opener.

The Magpies drew level just before half-time as Tottenham goalkeeper Brandon Austin was powerless to resist an effort from Alexander Isak.

Plenty of substitutions in the second half stemmed the flow of chances for both teams, leaving the match at 1-1.

A penalty shootout was required to split the two teams, with Newcastle winning it 5-4 at the end of play.

With so much happening during the match, here’s a look at a few things you may have missed.

Moments missed from Tottenham vs Newcastle friendly in Australia

Heung-Min Son scare

As both captains led their teams out onto the pitch at the MCG, pyrotechnics and smoke were on display to add to the atmosphere that was building.

This sudden burst happened to scare Heung-Min Son as he walked out, eventually leading him to laugh at the situation.

Ange Postecoglou moment

Just before the start of the game, Postecoglou received a hero’s welcome from the Australian crowd and from a mascot.

One of the youngsters split off from their group and ran over to the Spurs boss to give him a big hug in a heartwarming moment.

No VAR inclusion

Fans got a glimpse back into a world without VAR as the match didn’t include the feature that many have come to loath.

Both the pros and cons of the system were on display as the match flowed quickly and goals were scored without the fear of them being ruled out.

However, Maddison was perhaps a bit fortunate not to have his goal ruled out for a hint of handball in the build-up.

Dan Burn shirt problem

Just a few minutes into the game, the friendly soon turned slightly hostile as Dan Burn was caught up in a challenge.

The defender played on with a tear in the back of his shirt and that left him slightly exposed until a new kit could be sourced for him later in the half.

Heung-Min Son and Kieran Trippier reunite

With Son playing on the left wing, it meant there would be a reunion with former Tottenham star Kieran Trippier.

The two clashed on a few occasions, including one where there was a little hug after they went to ground.

Dejan Kulusevski position

A lot has been said about the best position for Dejan Kulusevski in the second half of the season, with Postecoglou struggling to find exactly where he best fits.

The Swedish international has often played on the left or as an attacking midfielder, but against Newcastle, he was trialled as a striker.

It remains to be seen whether he will be kept in that role going forward.

Ange Postecoglou mistake

There was a humorous moment at the end of the 90 minutes as Postecoglou walked towards the opposition bench to shake Eddie Howe’s hand.

The Spurs boss wasn’t aware that penalties were scheduled for if the match finished as a draw.

As he walked across, the fourth official had to remind him, leading to a scene of laughter from Postecoglou as he realised his mistake.
