Why Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea departure could be very good news for Tottenham - opinion

Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from Chelsea may have handed Tottenham Hotspur a transfer boost.

It’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino’s move to Stamford Bridge didn’t go down well with Spurs supporters last summer.

The Argentine enjoyed five-and-a-half brilliant years at Tottenham, where he guided them to a Champions League final back in 2019.

Pochettino’s spell at Chelsea has proven to be less successful, with the former Spurs boss leaving the west London club by mutual consent on Tuesday.

It comes after a run of five wins in their last six Premier League games, which led to the Blues finishing just three points behind Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham.

And while Spurs fans are likely to be glad to see Pochettino head out the door, it may also hand them a boost in their pursuit of Conor Gallagher.

Pochettino exit could hand Tottenham Conor Gallagher boost

It’s no secret that Pochettino was a huge admirer of Gallagher, having handed him the armband in Ben Chilwell and Reece James’ absence this season.

The Argentine boss repeatedly stated his desire to keep hold of Chelsea’s academy product.

TBR confirmed on Friday that the west London club are gearing themselves up to allow Gallagher to leave.

With Pochettino gone, there is likely to be less resistance to a Gallagher sale this summer, handing Spurs an opportunity to land the Englishman.

Tottenham have been long linked with a move for the 24-year-old, with Postecoglou keen to bolster his options in midfield.

The Aussie boss is also said to be a huge admirer of Gallagher and after Pochettino’s departure, Gallagher is facing further uncertainty over his future.

With just 13 months left on his contract, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Spurs make an early move for the England international.

Gallagher’s stats for Chelsea this season

Gallagher is a natural fit for Postecoglou’s style of football due to his tireless work-rate off the ball.

But the midfielder’s quality on the ball can often go under the radar and he’s made a significant contribution in the final third for Chelsea this term.

16 goal involvements in 50 games for Chelsea this season represents a better return than any of Tottenham’s midfielders, including James Maddison who ended the season with 13.

Maddison has played 20 games less than Gallagher. But Spurs are lacking another player in the middle of the park who can affect games in the attacking third.
