The South Carolina Gamecocks and head coach Mark Kingston entered Hoover, Alabama and the SEC Tournament on a six game losing streak. It’s a streak that the Gamecocks were finally able to snap with a win on Day 1 against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

With that win, South Carolina earned the right to take on Arkansas in their second game. During the bottom of the fourth inning, Kingston spoke with the SEC Network broadcast. There, he shared just how important that win on Tuesday was for the Gamecocks.

“I think it was important,” Mark Kingston said. “We talked about it all week, all the teams here, we kind of already think we’re in the NCAA Tournament because of the resumes. But we ended the season on a little bit of a lull and played some great teams, and just it’s important to get a win and get that good mojo going again. I think that’s important for the psyche of the team.”

One of the biggest reasons why South Carolina was able to beat Alabama was the performance of Chris Veach out of the bullpen. He’s someone who Mark Kingston called out in particular when reflecting on the win.

“It was very important for us. Obviously, it was very important for us and he gave us his best outing of the year on a really big stage at a really big time. The plan for us was to get him in there for two innings, maybe three — six to nine outs,” Kingston said.

“But when you’re pitching that well and you’re cruising, you’ve got to give the guy a chance to keep going. He gave it to us, all the way to complete the game and that was huge for us.”

Day 1 of the SEC Tournament was great for Mark Kingston and South Carolina. It’s a quick turnaround, though, as the Gamecocks look to focus on the task at hand.
