Report: Tottenham Hotspur are now absolutely convinced that they need to sign £34m defender this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are now absolutely convinced that they need to sign a £34m-rated defender this summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

Ange Postecoglou’s side ended the season fifth in the Premier League, which shows clear signs of progression.

The Australian boss has completely reinvented the North Londoners’ style of play and will be desperate to go one further next term – qualifying for the Champions League.

With the transfer window fast approaching, Postecoglou and club chiefs will be drawing up a list of targets and they are convinced they need to sign one defender.

Tottenham Hotspur convinced they need to sign Alessandro Buongiorno

According to Tuttosport, Tottenham target Alessandro Buongiorno is expected to make a decision on his future when the season ends, with Torino’s last game taking place this Sunday.

Spurs are ‘convinced’ that they need to sign Buongiorno this summer and it seems a fee of around £34m could tempt the Serie A club to sanction a sale.

Chelsea are also thought to be eyeing a move for the centre-back, with multiple clubs in Italy also eager to land his signature.

Though, Premier League clubs are thought to have the advantage due to their spending power.

Alessandro Buongiorno statistics

According to FBref, Buongiorno ranks in the top one per cent for interceptions per 90 compared to his positional peers across the big five leagues.

That evinces how proactive and aggressive he is in his defensive approach – traits which Postecoglou clearly likes. Further, he sits in the top six per cent for tackles, which only amplifies that notion.

The 24-year-old’s data puts him in a similar profile to Cristian Romero.
