Mikey Johnston delivers emotional farewell message to West Brom ahead of Celtic return

Mikey Johnston has enjoyed a positive time of things away from Celtic on loan at Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion.

The Republic of Ireland international joined the Baggies on deadline day after struggling to nail down a regular slot under Brendan Rodgers, and it is fair to say he thrived in his new environment.

Per Transfermarkt, Johnston scored seven times and registered two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions, helping West Brom reach the playoff places before Southampton knocked them out in the semi-final.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for his loan side, who exceeded expectations to come close to achieving promotion to the Premier League; however, the experience the winger has gained will stand him in good stead for his future career exploits.

With his loan spell at an end, Johnston posted a compilation of his best moments in a West Brom jersey on Instagram with a lengthy caption where he described the spell as one of the happiest moments of his career.

In full, he said: ‘I wish it could’ve finished differently, but still such a happy period of my career. An amazing club with such good people. Thank you for everything @wba and to the fans for the unbelievable support you’ve given myself and the team all season.’

Per Fotmob, the Irishman shone in the West Midlands, creating 21 chances, completing 39 dribbles and obtaining an average match rating of 7.06/10.

Mikey Johnston’s future at Celtic under the microscope

Despite his impact at West Brom, it is unclear where Johnston’s future lies as pre-season awaits after the players return from a deserved break.

Celtic need to determine if he has done enough to earn another chance; however, he is bound to have interest on the market, which may prompt the club to cash in while his stock is high.

Either way, the Hoops have landed themselves in a win-win scenario due to his excellent time away from the club, and it will be intriguing to see what lies in store for the Lennoxtown graduate.
