Report: Newcastle could actually look to sell £300k wonderkid, Eddie Howe thinks he is nowhere near ready

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe gave a lot of his youngsters a chance against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, some of which will not have a future at the club.

Alex Murphy came on and produced a steady display, enjoying his first minutes in black and white since signing a new contract. He is a player that Newcastle think can have a bright future on Tyneside, with Eddie Howe a big fan of the 19-year-old.

In contrast, Amadou Diallo got some minutes off the bench, yet it has been reported by the Shields Gazette that he is going to be released when his contract expires this summer.

But the one youngster that every Toon fan was talking about after Wednesday’s game in Australia was Garang Kuol. After two very challenging loan spells, he made his first ever appearance for Newcastle United after arriving from Central Coast Mariners in January 2023. He arrived for £300,000 with a lot of hype, but his first appearance in black and white left a lot to be desired.

Kuol barely got a kick, with the 19-year-old asked to play up front at a time when an inexperienced Newcastle side could not get a hold of the ball. The Australia international was unable to get involved, but was able to convert his penalty in the shootout win.

What could happen with Garang Kuol at Newcastle United

Next up for Kuol is Newcastle’s second game in Australia, with the Magpies due to face the A-League All Stars on Friday. The teenager will hope to feature again, with Eddie Howe set to name a much younger side for the game at the Marvel Stadium.

Long term, it is unclear what the future holds for Kuol. His move to Newcastle United has not yet gone to plan, with the teenager not really showing any signs of development after loan spells with Hearts and Volendam.

And, according to the Athletic, Eddie Howe does not believe that Kuol is even close to being ready for the first-team. They add that he could even be sold.

What Eddie Howe has said about Garang Kuol’s future

Following his first ever appearance in a Newcastle United shirt, Eddie Howe spoke to Fox Sports was asked questions about what is next for Kuol.

“I think it’s always difficult to say for certain what’s going to happen with a player at this stage, there is a long way to go before the season starts,” he said.

“But possibly another loan spell for him will be important.

“He’s had a couple of loan spells now and I think he needs the next one to be a successful one.

“I think he needs the next one to be successful and we need him to play more game time and hopefully that’ll happen.”

Newcastle must persevere with Aussie wonderkid

It seems way too early to think about selling Kuol, and it is surely unlikely that Newcastle will take that decision.

But it is certainly something that could happen, with Newcastle open to any way they can increase their revenue. There has even been speculation that Yankuba Minteh could be sold, and he is much closer to being Premier League ready than Kuol.

When it comes to the young Socceroo, Newcastle must persevere. He was signed because of his potential, and he is not going to reach it overnight. He is still only 19, and barely has any senior experience.

You could draw comparisons to Lewis Hall, who has only recently shown signs of progress since joining the club last year. And while he was a better player than Kuol when he signed for the club, he has had the luxury of working with Howe all season.

Another loan move seems like the best option for Kuol, but it will be a difficult decision given the way the previous two spells have gone.
