Bayern Munich update could have potentially worrying knock-on effect for Sheffield Wednesday - opinion

The latest developments at Bayern Munich could have huge potential knock-on effects for Sheffield Wednesday.

Bayern Munich are a huge club in a transition phase right now, with the German giants appointing a new manager after finishing 3rd in the Bundesliga, and 18 points behind winners Bayer Leverkusen.

And the club are set to hire a new manager after Thomas Tuchel’s recent departure, with Hansi Flick among the names considered as his replacement.

But it looks like Bayern will go in a completely different direction now with Burnley boss Vincent Kompany apparently heading to the club, despite overseeing the Clarets’ relegation from the Premier League this season.

Flick, who Danny Rohl worked under as no.2 at Bayern and in the German national team, was seen as a safe pair of hands, whilst Kompany is viewed as the more innovative option.

And Kompany leaving Burnley could spell bad news for Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl would be viable option for Burnley

Burnley are a very innovative club themselves; they won the Championship title in style under Kompany in the 2022/23 season and will surely want a manager to come in and keep that style going.

They hired a young and inexperienced Kompany and got great success in doing so. So expect the Clarets to want a similar style of manager once again, and expect Rohl to come into the thinking.

We’ve already seen the likes of Sunderland and Hull City take interest in Rohl following his miraculous Sheffield Wednesday turnaround in 2023/24.

And it may be that Burnley would be foolish to not consider Rohl as a potential option, and given the ongoing discussions around his future in S6, Burnley may fancy their chances of a quick swoop for Rohl.

As things stand, though, prising Rohl from Hillsborough would cost any club £5million, and taking the backroom team as well would cost double that amount.

One unlikely name could come to the rescue for Sheffield Wednesday

Burnley may be expected to cast a wide net in search of their Kompany heir. But it looks as though the Clarets might consider a cheaper option.

Journalist Darren Witcoop has revealed on X that Burnley may promote Kompany’s no.2 Craig Bellamy into the head coach role.

And that might come as a sigh of relief for Sheffield Wednesday, who may well have expected Burnley to show a slight interest in Rohl this summer.

It’s a move that makes sense on paper given Rohl’s stock right now, and the type of manager that Burnley would want; young and innovative, similar to Kompany, with Rohl’s recent Championship experience only making him a more suitable candidate.

But it looks as though Bellamy could come to the rescue for Sheffield Wednesday somewhat; that, and it’s also looking increasingly likely that Rohl extends his stay in S6.

Talks between Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri remain ongoing and positive ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
