Liverpool have made the first move into signing a replacement for ‘quality’ player this summer

Liverpool are in for a busy time in the summer transfer window this year.

Although they did plenty to improve 12 months ago, the feeling is that the Reds are still one or two big signings short.

With Michael Edwards returning and Richard Hughes coming in, there is expectation on FSG to get their business right.

Arne Slot will also no doubt have some input into who comes and goes, with the new head coach ready to shape his first ever Liverpool squad.

According to journalist David Lynch, the group that Slot takes over may be about to lose one of its members.

Liverpool looking for Caoimhin Kelleher replacement

Liverpool’s goalkeeping department is set for plenty of change in the early days of Slot’s reign.

The Reds have already seen coaches John Achterberg and Jack Robinson depart. There’s good news that a third – Claudio Taffarel – is set to stay, but that’s still a lot of upheaval.

As well as the coaches though, there is big speculation over whether the players themselves will still be here come September. Losing Alisson Becker is unthinkable for Liverpool fans, but there are rumours that that could happen.

Caoimhin Kelleher could be heading for the exit door, too. After a really good season, the Irishman looks ready to step up and be a number one. And speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Lynch says the wheels for Kelleher to leave are already in motion.

“I expect there’s going to be offers for him.,” says the reporter. “There were a few light enquires for him last summer but nothing really progressed. I really think there’ll be an opportunity for him to move on from Liverpool and one that he’ll want to grasp. I think it’s going to be time for all parties to shake hands on a departure.

“Nothing concrete yet in terms of who that might be to, but I’m sure there will be massive interest in Kelleher because he’s a quality goalkeeper. I know already, it’s my understanding that Liverpool have made some tentative enquiries around potential goalkeepers who could come in and be a replacement as a back-up, so that’s something they are preparing themselves for.”

Who Liverpool could be targeting

Buying a new back-up ‘keeper is never easy. You need them to be good enough to step in whenever needed, but not so much as they become disillusioned with a lack of playing time.

With Alisson being unimpeachable, this is even more pronounced at Liverpool. Whoever comes in absolutely knows that they’re not getting past the Brazilian any time soon.

Nevertheless, as was seen in full view this season, a back-up will get chances at Liverpool and does need to keep the standard high.

Without Kelleher being as good as he is, the Reds may have missed out on the top four this season. Alisson missed 10 Premier League games and that can make all the difference.

So, the new man has to be of that kind of level. And according to reports on Wednesday, Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow could be one of those in the frame. The Dutchman is Slot’s No.1 but has had a poor time with injuries over recent years. While that doesn’t sound too encouraging, he’s one to keep an eye on.
