Man Utd fans left divided as Bruno Fernandes wins coveted award, claim £19m man was ‘robbed’

Manchester United have announced the winner of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award as Bruno Fernandes.

The Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award has been around since 1988 when Brian McClair first picked up the accolade. Since then, it’s been awarded to some of the most influential names in the club’s history, ranging from Roy Keane to Eric Cantona to David de Gea.

Now, even after a drab 23/24 campaign, the trophy needed a new home – and it goes to Manchester United club captain, Bruno Fernandes. The 29-year-old was one of the shining lights in what was a semi-abysmal 23/24 campaign.

Bruno won the award for the third time since joining the Red Devils ranks in 2020. He is now just one off equalling the record for the most POTY awards, with club legends De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo on four each.

Manchester United fans react to Bruno Fernandes winning Player of the Year

Manchester United announced on their official X account that Bruno had scooped up the accolade.

Dozens of Manchester United fans flocked to the comments, to initially congratulate Bruno on winning the coveted award for the third time in as little as four years.

A first writes: ‘Deserved. Well done to our Captain Portuguese Magnifico. Carrying us yet again. And truly deserved this award. The best midfielder in the world.’

A second puts: ‘My man Bruno. I hope he gets to lift the big pots as United captain, I really do. Deserves the praise, and more of it.’

‘Congratulations Bruno Fernandes’, ‘The only world-class player in our side’, and a sea of ‘well deserved’ also flood the comments.

But it’s safe to say that some Manchester United supporters are not entirely happy about the decision.

Some fans think Diogo Dalot was robbed

What became clear is that many Red Devils fans believe one man was robbed. They think Diogo Dalot should have won for the first time after his season’s efforts.

One wrote: ‘He’s been brilliant these last few games [Bruno] but should’ve been Dalot tbh. Anyway, congratulations captain.’

Another adds: ‘Bruno was 2nd for me. So it isn’t that wild. But Dalot deserved this award. Was our best & most consistent player this year.’

‘Should have scrapped this award altogether. Furthermore, Dalot has been robbed here if anything,’ another says.

Another fan rages: ‘Love Bruno but this is a joke. Dalot has been way more consistent throughout the season and Bruno’s recent form has blinded people.’

It’s a tough one. The £19m man has been excellent, and very consistent, but Bruno has dragged Manchester United through games single-handedly – as per usual.

Luckily, the Manchester United full-back did win the Players’ Player Award, so at least his efforts in 2023/24 have been recognized.

Many also claim that the awards should have been scrapped altogether, with none of the Manchester United first-team squad worthy to join the list of illustrious names this season.

Nevertheless, congratulations captain. We’re lucky Bruno is red.
