Latest Danny Rohl contract news will surely see one Sheffield Wednesday player stay this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday are thought to be nearing a new contract for manager Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions with manager Danny Rohl over a possible new contract for the 35-year-old.

He and Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri have been holding positive talks in recent weeks, with the pair meeting in London.

And BBC journalist Rob Staton revealed on Thursday that those talks are now in the final stages, with Rohl close to agreeing new terms in S6.

Rohl’s current Sheffield Wednesday contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season.

And a new deal for Rohl could well tempt a number of other players into committing their futures to the club, especially Josh Windass.

Josh Windass offered new Sheffield Wednesday contract

Windass, 30, was among the names offered a new Sheffield Wednesday contract when the club announced its retained list.

But Windass had previously revealed that a ‘big component’ behind him potentially extending his stay at Hillsborough was whether or not Rohl stayed.

Windass said: “Danny’s a big component, I think for the majority of the lads, to be honest. I think we feel like next year we can go on to even bigger things.”

Windass has just completed his fourth full season with Sheffield Wednesday after joining the club midway through the 2019/20 campaign.

He’s since scored 40 total goals, with 17 assists in 135 appearances for the Owls, with the likes of Derby County, Hull City, and West Brom all being linked with the striker ahead of the summer transfer window opening next month.

Danny Rohl will be desperate to keep Josh Windass at Sheffield Wednesday

Earlier in the 2023/24 season, it was revealed that Rohl wanted to keep Barry Bannan, Di’Shon Bernard, and Windass at the club.

Bannan has now said on multiple occasions that he doesn’t see himself leaving Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Bernard’s future may be more unclear though with clubs in the Championship and Europe reportedly eyeing the Jamaican international.

And Windass may be in the same boat with Championship clubs showing an interest. But with the news of Rohl’s new contract, Windass and indeed the likes of Bernard may be ready to commit their futures to the club.

Not only that, but if Rohl stays then Sheffield Wednesday will be able to offer potential new signings a lot more certainty over joining the club, as players will surely see how Rohl has galvanised so many individual players and want the same for themselves.
