‘The best advice he gave me’: Phil Foden shares one thing Pep Guardiola told him behind the scenes this season

Phil Foden has shared one key thing that Pep Guardiola has told him at Manchester City this season.

The midfielder ended what has been a stunning individual Premier League campaign last weekend as he scored two goals in City’s 3-1 win over West Ham United to seal the Manchester club’s sixth Premier League title in seven years.

Having scored 19 goals and delivered eight assists in 35 league games, the 23-year-old was named the Premier League Player of the Season.

Now though, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester United, the England international has shed some light on how the City manager has helped him produce the performances he’s delivered throughout the campaign.

Speaking in a recent interview with BBC Sport, Foden had this to say about Guardiola including how he’s guided him through this latest season and his eventual exit from the club.

He said: “I’ve not known any other thing apart from him, so it’ll be strange when he does go. I don’t want to think too much about it. I want to enjoy the things we’re doing now with him.

“I feel like there’s other managers out there who complicate it a little bit.

“The best advice he gave me this season was just ‘don’t try and be Phil Foden in every action’, and I feel like that advice really went a long way.

“I’ve been here for a long time now working with the manager. And I think now is the time for me to step up and try and be the man who’s going to score the goals.

“I knew what I was capable of doing this season, it’s so good to say that I’ve had a good season and I want to continue to play well.”

Foden has been Guardiola’s star man

Taking into account not just the number of goals and assists he’s delivered this season but the performances that have led to him being named the Premier League’s Player of the Season and the FWA Men’s Player of the Year, it’s clear that Foden has benefited from Guardiola’s advice.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s big final against United at Wembley Stadium, if the England international can once again deliver a star performance and help his side win another trophy, this would be the icing on the cake of what has already been a dream season for Foden.
