All of the things VAR got wrong involving Newcastle United in the Premier League this season

Newcastle United may still qualify for Europe.

While Eddie Howe could only follow up last season’s success with a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League, the 4-2 win at Brentford on the final day could yet prove hugely important.

Indeed, not only did it ensure Newcastle finished above Manchester United for the first time since 1977 but it means the club are on the brink of the Europa Conference League.

Should Manchester City beat the Red Devils in the FA Cup final on Saturday, Newcastle will be granted entry into Europe’s third-tier club competition. If the reverse happens, Howe’s side will go without continental competition.

It was a long and difficult campaign for Newcastle. Eliminated from the Champions League by the finest of margins including a ridiculous VAR call away at Paris Saint-Germain to deny the Toon a famous win, there were still certainly great moments.

Now the dust has settled somewhat on the League season, ESPN have started to look back.

They have now compiled a list on all of the VAR mistakes this season in the Premier League.

The list compiled is a Premier League-only one, so obviously doesn’t include Tino Livramento’s ‘handball’ away at PSG, it should be noted.

ESPN now reveal the list of mistakes recorded by the Independent Key Match Incidents Panel, who oversee VAR calls.

They say that Newcastle should not have been awarded a penalty at Wolves in October when Fabian Schar was fouled by Hwang Hee-Chan when the hosts were 1-0 up.

They also claim both Kai Havertz and Bruno Guimaraes should both have been sent off during the controversial win over Arsenal at St James’ Park in November. The score was 0-0 at the time of both incidents.

The final mistake involving Newcastle is said to be the fact Nottingham Forest weren’t awarded a spot-kick during the Toon’s 3-2 win at the City Ground in February when Taiwo Awoniyi was brought down in the box by Martin Dubravka. The score was 2-2 at the time.

Newcastle actually benefited from VAR this season

It’s obviously difficult to really feel that VAR actually benefited Newcastle this season given what happened with Livramento in the French capital.

However, the league table of VAR mistakes compiled by ESPN say three VAR calls went in Newcastle’s favour in the Premier League in the season just gone, with just one going against them.
