Guglielmo Vicario blown away by three ‘outstanding’ Tottenham Hotspur players

Tottenham Hotspur have rebuilt the defensive options at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal and there could be even more additions this summer.

Familiar faces such as Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have all moved on in the last year and Spurs now have a new-look back line.

Cristian Romero needed more talent around him and Tottenham brought in a new goalkeeper by landing Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli

A new centre back partner arrived too with Micky van de Ven joining from Wolfsburg whilst Destiny Udogie was able to finally start his Tottenham career after signing from Udinese.

Pedro Porro arrived in January 2023, so Tottenham’s back line is still relatively new.

Add in January signing Radu Dragusin and Tottenham have really invested in the back line in recent windows.

Guglielmo Vicario on Tottenham Hotspur defenders

Tottenham continue to give up chances to the opposition but the hope is that these talented young defenders will develop together and become a top unit.

Goalkeeper Vicario is a little older at 27 but should still have plenty of years ahead of him given the longevity of goalkeepers.

This is an exciting proposition for Tottenham fans and Vicario himself seems to be very encouraged.

Speaking to Football London, goalkeeper Vicario has praised all three of Romero, Van de Ven and Dragusin.

Vicario feels all three of those centre backs are simply ‘outstanding’ even if they are all different in their own ways.

Vicario highlighted that Dragusin is ‘tough’ and is desperate to improve at Tottenham, praising his mentality since arriving at Spurs.

The Tottenham stopper added that Romero is simply ‘massive’ having already won the World Cup and established himself as a leader at Tottenham.

Vicario praised Van de Ven too, believing that his pace is so important to Tottenham’s style of play under Ange Postecoglou, believing that Spurs have three quality centre backs to kick on with moving forward.

“Every one of those lads is outstanding,” said Vicario. “They have different characteristics as players but every one of them has been outstanding during the season. Cuti and Micky have played a bit more but then Radu came in in January. He’s a very good lad, he’s tough and he wants to improve. He’s got a good mentality.”

“Cuti, well I don’t need to use too many words on Cuti! He won the World Cup in 2022 so I’m not the right person to speak about him. He’s a massive player and Micky of course has been outstanding.”

“In the way we play, with the high line, his speed has been very, very important for us. I’m very proud. I can say they are the best defenders I’ve played with so I’m very proud of that. Praise to them for a big season but next season we want to do better,” he added.

More defenders could arrive

Tottenham’s defensive revolution has been impressive so far but there could be even more moves to come.

Romero, Van de Ven and Draguson are quality centre back options but one more central defender could arrive this summer.

A natural left-footer to offer competition with Van de Ven could be ideal with Ben Davies not exactly suited to that role, especially in the pace department.

Both full back positions could see arrivals too.

Porro has kicked on this season but Emerson Royal – wanted by AC Milan and Bayern Munich – hasn’t particularly impressed in the right back role under Postecoglou.

It’s a similar story on the left side with Destiny Udogie impressive but the aforementioned Davies not really suiting Postecoglou’s setup means another left back could be targeted.

Spurs may even look for a player who can play in both positions with Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters thought to be a target.

Tottenham’s defensive recruitment has been impressive of late and we could yet see two or three more additions as Postecoglou continues to mould his Spurs squad.
