James Maddison shares what he’s found ‘challenging’ under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has now shared his thoughts on his first campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

Wednesday’s post-season friendly in Australia against Newcastle United marked the official end of Tottenham‘s 2023/24 campaign.

A successful season on the whole can be chalked down with Europa League secured in Ange Postecoglou‘s first term at the club.

That’s not to say it has been smooth sailing over the course of the campaign with plenty of areas for improvement to be addressed over the summer.

It was also James Maddison‘s first campaign at the club and his season reflected the same ups and downs which Spurs had.

Following the game against the Toon in Melbourne, the England international discussed the challenges he’s faced at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

James Maddison reflects on his first campaign at Tottenham

Having signed from Leicester City in the summer, Maddison could not have got off to a better start to the campaign at Spurs.

The midfielder earned the August Player of the Month award in the Premier League after providing a goal and two assists in his first month.

However, injuries massively hindered his campaign and it has only been lately where the midfielder has begun to look like the player who kicked off the campaign in style.

In the final three games of the Premier League campaign, provided the same number of assists (2) as he did in his previous 18 games.

Maddison kept up his impressive recent form with a goal Down Under and after the game he shared his thoughts on the 2023/24 campaign.

“Yeah he’s quite popular isn’t he? Ange is a good man. He’s a great character. I love working for him and to see him in his country with the support he gets here was nice to see,” he said on Postecoglou.

“The first season of any new project is always challenging. It has its ups and downs. I’m really enjoying working for him, genuinely, and I think we can achieve big things hopefully. So the first year of many I hope.”

An interesting summer awaits James Maddison

With this summer’s Euros is now just weeks away and the Spurs midfielder has made Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad.

Maddison’s struggles since returning from his ankle injury may well put him at risk of not making the cut for the final squad to travel to Germany.

However, there could be an upside to that for Tottenham fans with the 27-year-old then having the whole summer to rest up after what has been a testing campaign.

Naturally, fans will want to see Maddison attend the Euros as it would provide the midfielder with a big confidence boost going into the new season.

But Maddison’s international record under Southgate is far from encouraging ahead of the cut for the final squad.
