N.J. weather: Rain and thunderstorms expected for Memorial Day

Memorial Day festivities could get soggy on Monday as weather forecasters are predicting possible showers and thunderstorms hitting New Jersey.

The Mount Holly station of the National Weather Service is calling for a 30% chance of showers. According to Accuweather, thunderstorms, some of them heavy, are expected Monday afternoon through evening.

Forecasters are calling for two rounds of rainy weather for the holiday. After some possible rain in the morning, a cold front late Monday is expected to bring a second, stronger round of showers and thunderstorms into the night.

“Severe thunderstorms during that time will be capable of damaging wind gusts and large hail. Heavy rain may result in localized flash flooding as well,” according to the weather service.

On Saturday morning, a dense fog advisory is in effect from Sandy Hook, N.J. across Long Island to Montauk Point, until 10 a.m. Boaters may find low visibility making navigation difficult out to 20 nautical miles from shore. They are urged to make sure their running lights are on and proceed with caution.

As of Sunday morning, officials canceled the Memorial Day tradition in which the mayors of Phillipsburg, N.J. and Easton, Pa. meet on the bridge over the Delaware River and throw a wreath into the water. The annual parade in Easton has been canceled, with celebrations to take place indoors at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Post on Corriere Road.

Forecasters are expecting temperatures in the high 70s to around 80 Monday.

Strong storms could develop in the region on Monday with high winds and hail, according to the National Weather Service.
