Man killed and 2 people wounded Sunday in Trenton shooting

Investigators cordoned off a block of Clinton Avenue in Trenton on Sunday morning where a man was fatally shot and two other people were wounded.

One person was killed and two others wounded during a shooting in Trenton early Sunday, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at 2:10 a.m. near a bar in the 500 block of North Clinton Avenue, a spokesperson for the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, Casey DeBlasio, said in an email.

The victim was identified as Dwayne Penix, 20, of Trenton. No information was available on the identity of the two other shooting victims. No arrests were reported as of Sunday.

Det. Lt. Lisette Rios, a spokesperson for the Trenton Police Department, said officers in a patrol car nearby heard gunshots and observed a large crowd running from the area. They found two people shot.

“Multiple officers arrived on scene to assist in securing it while other officers rendered aid to the victims,” Rios said in an email.

Trenton EMS took the victims to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in the city for treatment, and a third victim arrived at the hospital shortly afterward, Rios said. One of the victims was pronounced dead, said Rios, who added that the two survivors were listed in stable condition.

No one returned a message left Sunday morning at the bar, which is in the city’s working-class East Trenton neighborhood between Route 1 and Assunpink Creek, about a mile northeast of the Statehouse.

Authorities said the investigation was being led by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force. They asked anyone with relevant information to call Det. Ramon Santiago at (609) 508-6623 or Sgt. Roberto Reyes at (609) 256-0997, or email the task force at mchtftips@mercercounty.org.
