Report: Newcastle would prefer to focus on signing £60m star right now

Newcastle United appear to be focusing on strengthening all areas of their squad this summer.

Indeed, quite how far the rebuild of Eddie Howe’s side is allowed to go while working under FFP limitations remains to be seen but it seems obvious Newcastle are looking to freshen things up.

The club are confident about signing Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo of Bournemouth and Fulham respectively on free transfers as they look to rebuild an injury-hit defence.

A new goalkeeper, meanwhile, is also said to be on the agenda.

While Nick Pope seemingly wants to stay at St James’ Park, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale is said to be a target.

Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia, meanwhile, is reportedly someone the club are pushing to sign before the European Championship.

Then there’s the frontline.

Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool were the only Premier League teams who scored more than Howe’s side last season, so goals aren’t currently a problem.

Still, Miguel Almiron’s potential departure amid interest from Saudi Arabia may open up a space on the right-hand side of the attack.

Newcastle are chasing signings in attacking positions and a report from the Daily Mail has shared more insight.

Newcastle make Michael Olise a transfer priority

Despite recent links with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Newcastle are said to be focusing their attention on Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

The winger has been touted as a Toon target for a while now and the report suggests the former Reading youngster is viewed as a more “immediate” target than the aforementioned England striker.

Previously, BBC Sport have claimed the Eagles would look for around £60m were they to sell Olise.

Newcastle already have huge competition for Michael Olise

Such is the esteem in which Olise is held, Newcastle have some very big competition when it comes to his signature.

Only a few days ago did Fabrizio Romano claim both Manchester United and Chelsea were pushing to sign him.

With Newcastle not playing European football next season, they are already trailing their rivals in that respect when it comes to attracting potential targets.

Whether it means Newcastle categorically cannot sign Olise remains to be seen of course but it’s unlikely to help matters…
