Report: 114-race win F1 team are now ‘working tirelessly’ to hire Adrian Newey after Red Bull exit

Red Bull have now experienced back-to-back race weekends where they’ve arguably not been the fastest car on the Formula 1 grid.

That hasn’t happened in years and it was only Max Verstappen’s individual brilliance that earned the team victory at Imola before their most disappointing race of the season in Monaco.

It coincides with Adrian Newey’s imminent departure from the team and the German outlet Auto Motor und Sport believes one team principal is working overtime behind the scenes to secure his services.

Verstappen identified after Sunday’s race on the streets of Monte Carlo that the only positive to take from the weekend was that they now know what they needed to fix before the Canadian Grand Prix.

Red Bull having someone like Newey to call upon in these situations has been an essential pillar of their success over the past two decades.

Williams team principal James Vowles wants to be in that position going forward and is working ‘tirelessly’ to bring in Newey once his Red Bull contract expires.

It would be a fitting return for the 65-year-old engineer after spending some of his early years in the sport with the Grove-based outfit.

After spending his formative years in F1 with Leyton House and March, Newey initially joined Williams in 1991.

While with the team, Newey helped four different drivers go on to win world titles before moving on to McLaren in 1997.

The likes of Nigel Mansell, Jacques Villeneuve, Damon Hill and Alain Prost can give the design genius credit for some of their success.

While Newey has gone on to achieve a huge amount of success in Formula 1, Williams have never reached those heights again since his departure.

There was a time in the last 10 years when they’ve been the slowest car on the grid and Vowles is working tirelessly to help the Williams return to where he thinks they belong and having Newey in the team to help that cause would make a massive difference.

Newey looks set to have plenty of options available to him once he leaves Red Bull but doesn’t look close to deciding at this stage.

The report from AMuS suggests that Vowles has nearly £80m to spend as a ‘war chest’ from investors to help Williams return to the front of the grid and add to their 114 race wins.

They also say that Vowles is ‘working tirelessly’ to sign Adrian Newey and bring the ‘mastermind’ back to the place where his rise began.

However, Ferrari want to prevent a reunion between the two parties if they can help it.

Frederic Vasseur has abandoned a pursuit of Pierre Wache to concentrate on hiring Newey.

The idea of bringing him and Lewis Hamilton to the team seemed like a pipe dream at the end of last season but is now a real possibility.

It’s been previously suggested that Newey may have concerns over the infrastructure at Williams.

Parts of the Williams factory are 20 years out of date and the budget cap introduced in F1 has slowed down their development in this area.

David Coulthard has already told Newey what he would do in his situation and taking a step back from the sport is still a possibility.
