Nicki Minaj says the late Princess Diana is a 'dear friend of hers' in bizarre video

Nicki Minaj is known for bringing out her exaggerated English accent at any given opportunity, and it would appear her obsession with doing so stems from her love of Princess Diana.

The European leg of the Pink Friday 2 World Tour has been predictably chaotic, as if anybody would have ever expected anything less. With Nicki Minaj now in the UK following her well-documented Amsterdam arrest debacle, the Superbass rapper is once again raising eyebrows after she claimed to have an unlikely friendship with the late Princess Diana whilst on stage in Birmingham.

Nicki Minaj claims to be a friend of Princess Diana on stage

Barbz of the TikTok world couldn’t help but laugh at viral footage of the unique rapper interacting with the crowd – passing the mic between audience members as she asked the Birmingham attendees to shout out the area they were from.

“Hi Spain!” grinned Minaj, as she strutted across the stage, before handing the mic to a Welsh person. Upon hearing that there was someone from Wales in the house, Minaj went straight into English accent mode (despite the audience member being Welsh) – telling the crowd: “Wales, it always reminds me of a dear friend of mine – well, she’s not here anymore, but the Princess of Wales,” much to the audiences’ delight.

“Let’s have a moment of silence for her,” continued Minaj, clasping her hands together and closing her eyes. Content she had paid ample respect to the late Princess, Minaj proceeded to tell the DJ to play the next song, as she began to dance to her Ariana Grande collaboration, Side To Side.

This isn’t the start of Minaj’s Diana obsession

What some audience members may not have realized, is that Minaj may have just been alluding to her 2023 hit, Princess Diana, on which she collaborated with Ice Spice.

“In the hood, I’m like Princess Diana,” rapped Ice Spice on the track which garnered nearly a quarter of a billion streams on Spotify, before Minaj added: “Live from London, straight from the palace”.

According to Genius’s interpretation of the lyrics, Minaj’s lyric about the Palace was her way of stating that “She and Ice Spice are the Queen and princess of rap, as compared to the Queen (Elizabeth) and princess (Diana) of England who are both dead.

“Nicki, thus, makes it clear that she and ice have replaced them.”
