Report: Sheffield Wednesday gifted potential lifeline in race for Premier League talent amid transfer talks

Sheffield Wednesday may have just been handed a huge potential boost in their pursuit of this Premier League man.

Sheffield Wednesday appear to be ramping up their summer transfer plans after securing the future of manager Danny Rohl.

The German coach has signed a new three-year extension after guiding the Owls to a 20th place finish in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

He and his recruitment team at Hillsborough now have a number of transfer targets on their radar, including loan trio James Beadle, Ian Poveda, and Ike Ugbo.

The Owls are also reportedly keen on signing former Liverpool talent Ovie Ejaria, as well as January targets Duncan McGuire and Mika Biereth.

The latter joined Austrian outfit Sturm Graz over Sheffield Wednesday in January and went on to score five and assist two more in 15 Austrian Bundesliga appearances.

He helped Sturm win the league and the Austrian champions are keen to re-sign the Arsenal forward, along with Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday handed potential Mika Biereth boost

It was recently revealed that Arsenal were set for talks with Sturm Graz over Biereth potentially joining the Austrian club on a permanent basis this summer.

But fresh reports coming out of Austria suggest that Graz are falling out of the race to sign Biereth this summer.

Kleine Zeitung claim that ‘it is unlikely’ that Sturm will re-sign Biereth this summer due to interest from England.

Rohl is in need of strikers this summer with the likes of Josh Windass out of contract, and names like Lee Gregory and Ashley Fletcher having already left, along with Ugbo.

Why do Sheffield Wednesday like Mika Biereth

At 21 years old, Biereth is a young player. And he’s just enjoyed the best season of his career having previously netted six and assisted five more for Motherwell in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign.

So his stock is high, and with Sheffield Wednesday desperately needing to bring down the average age of their squad this summer, a move for Biereth certainly makes sense.

And it’s also interesting to note that Wednesday continue to be linked with players they were linked with before; McGuire and Biereth two examples, showing the Owls’ faith in head of recruitment Kevin Beadell.

But as ever, the Owls need to strike soon if they’re to bring in the players they want to sign this summer.

And after looking like they were quickly falling out of the race for Biereth, this latest report from Austria may prove to be a lifeline for the Owls.
