Messi-like & German wonderkid: 3 Barca gems Rohl can target at Sheffield Wednesday after Flick news - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday could be about to benefit from Hansi Flick’s move to Barcelona.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the German coach has been appointed Barcelona manager – less than three months after he attended a Sheffield Wednesday match.

Hansi Flick has been out of work since he parted ways with Danny Rohl back in September.

Rohl had worked under his compatriot at Bayern Munich since 2019, before joining him in his move to the German national team in 2021.

After Flick was sacked, the pair went their separate ways and Rohl was appointed Sheffield Wednesday manager the following month.

Flick has since shown his support for his friend and former colleague, attending Wednesday’s1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle in March.

With the 59-year-old now set to take to Camp Nou, Rohl could look to take advantage of their relationship and bring in some of Barcelona’s talents from one of the best academies in world football.

While some may be ambitious, Flick could look to send some of his most promising youngsters to Hillsborough to work under a manager that he has trained up himself.

We take a look at some of the Barcelona prospects that Sheffield Wednesday could sign…

Barcelona gems that Hansi Flick could send to Sheffield Wednesday

Noah Darvich

Born in Germany, Noah Darvich came up through the academy of SC Freiburg before joining Barcelona in 2023.

The attacking midfielder has also risen through the ranks of the German national team and could already be known to both Hansi Flick and Danny Rohl, having first made his U16 debut in 2021.

He went onto make his mark on the U17 World Cup last year, picking up two goals and four assists in only seven games, which eventually led to his promotion to the U18s.

Darvich was named by The Guardian as one of the best players born in 2006 worldwide back in October and has since racked up 21 appearances for Barcelona Atletic, as well as netting twice in four games in the UEFA Youth League.

Darvich’s nationality could tempt Flick to send him out on loan to Hillsborough, to help him develop under Rohl.

Ander Astralaga

Sheffield Wednesday need to replace James Beadle and could make an ambitious move for one of Barcelona’s young talents.

Ander Astralaga joined Barca’s academy in 2018 and has featured for the B team since 2022.

The Spaniard has made 16 appearances this season and has six clean sheets, while he has been named on the bench for the senior team 23 times.

Astralaga does feel unlikely, but with Marc-Andre ter Stegen unlikely to be displaced anytime soon, Flick could look to find some regular game-time for the 20-year-old.

Lucas Roman

Lucas Roman was a regular in Argentina before he earned himself a move to Barcelona in January 2023.

The forward has made 25 appearances for Barcelona Atletic but has struggled with injuries this season, managing only six starts.

Roman is highly-rated at Camp Nou and was previously compared to Lionel Messi by the club president of his former club.

The Italy U20 international will be eager to finally kickstart his spell at Barcelona after injury problems, but could be a good signing to bolster Wednesday’s frontline.
