Tottenham fans left divided over Timo Werner transfer as ex-Chelsea forward reunites with Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham have announced their second signing of the summer transfer window, welcoming Timo Werner back for the 2024/25 season.

Spurs have moved quickly to bolster their ranks over the coming months, announcing an agreement for highly-rated prospect Lucas Bergvall back in February.

While the Djurgardens youngster is one for the future, a return for Werner is more of a short-term fix for Tottenham.

The German international joined on an initial loan deal in January, adding valuable depth to a squad that was missing Heung-Min Son for the AFC Asian Cup, alongside a host of injury troubles.

Two goals and three assists from Werner helped the Lilywhites towards a fifth-placed finish and Europa League qualification, even with injury cutting his season short.

There were questions over whether Ange Postecoglou would make the deal permanent in the summer, however, a compromise was reached.

On Tuesday, Tottenham announced that Werner would be returning to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig with a permanent option in the deal.

While it brings the North London outfit that bit closer to having more depth in the squad, it has left some fans divided over a move.

Tottenham fans react to Timo Werner transfer return

With the return of Werner now confirmed for another season, Tottenham fans have been left divided over whether it’s a good move or not.

One supporter commented on social media: “A new loan deal for Timo is a great deal. Shall be needed as a squad player during the course of next season.” while another added: “Amazing some people don’t think this is good business. Now to work on Ange’s next signings.”

Other fans were less than thrilled, with one person simply saying “Well then”, while another added: “I am delighted to say #LevyOut #ENICOut.”

On the whole, though, it appears that many are waiting to see what other signings may come through the door at Hotspur Way before judging the loan deal for Werner.

One fan stated: “Good deal. A great squad player who really looked like he was adapting well in Ange’s system. A good option to have considering large number of games next season.”

Another claimed: “Not happy or sad about this. Just kind of mehhhhh tbf.”

Tottenham transfer plan

With the transfer window not even open yet, there’s still plenty of time for Tottenham to formulate a plan for their summer business.

The added challenge of Europa League football means that Postecoglou will be juggling the fitness of his squad with the ideas he wants to display on the pitch.

With an injury-ravaged campaign been and gone, the summer must give extra options to the Tottenham boss without compromising quality.

Werner is certainly an option for the squad going forward, however, it is clear that Spurs are still in need of a forward who has the capability of taking on opposition defenders one-on-one and beating them.
