Tottenham experts agree on Timo Werner transfer return decision, on one condition

Tottenham have announced another loan deal for Timo Werner, as The Spurs News assesses a transfer return for the winger.

Spurs announced a return for forward Timo Werner on Tuesday, revealing that the ex-Chelsea star will be back at Hotspur Way for the 2024/25 season.

The German international spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign with Spurs, joining from RB Leipzig in January to help bolster the squad.

Werner scored two goals and assisted three in 13 Premier League appearances, showing signs of his quality.

Injury blighted the final few weeks of his season, but the 28-year-old will have another chance to show his ability at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham fans appear to be divided on Timo Werner re-joining the club in the summer transfer window.

So with that said, The Spurs News writers have assessed what the transfer return means for Ange Postecoglou and his side.

Werner’s loan is a deal which can probably only be judged by the end of the transfer window.

If Tottenham are to bring in more firepower in the forward positions – mainly at striker – it will be a transfer which would make a lot of sense.

Having Werner as a rotational player with Europa League football next season seems perfectly fine.

However, the German international did show his struggles in front of goal and does not look like a player who can be relied on to score ten or more goals in a campaign.

It also should not be viewed as a deal which will stunt 16-year-old Mikey Moore’s progression after making just two cameo appearances under Ange Postecoglou.

I’m not totally against Timo Werner returning for another season.

He’s versatile and proved to be effective in Ange Postecoglou’s system after his loan switch from RB Leipzig.

The problem will be if Werner turns out to be Tottenham’s only wide-forward signing this summer.

Spurs have lacked real quality off the left-hand side and Heung-min Son isn’t exactly suited to Postecoglou’s demands of his wingers.

With that being said, the Lilywhites will need added depth all over the pitch as they return to the Europa League.

Werner could prove to be a useful squad player next season, provided extra signings are made in the forward department.

The move for Timo Werner makes sense from a Tottenham perspective, but on the condition that another forward option is signed later in the transfer window.

The German international was a reliable option during the second half of the 2023/24 season, without making himself a standout option.

For that reason, a loan seems a sensible decision from Spurs, securing an early boost to their squad depth before a return to Europa League football.

Tottenham clearly need a different option in the summer though, with a forward who can take on defenders one-on-one and create space for their teammates.

It remains to be seen exactly who might fit that profile for Spurs, however, the view on a deal for Werner will likely hinge on another signing.
