£35m Chelsea player expected to be sold would actually be perfect for Enzo Maresca next season - opinion

It is widely expected that Chelsea are mere hours away from announcing their new manager following the recent sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues are set to bring in Enzo Maresca on a long-term contract to hopefully carry on the positive work being done by the side in recent months.

Despite links to the likes of Roberto De Zerbi and Kieran McKenna, it was claimed that the decision makers were keen on the Leicester City man due to his knowledge of the current squad.

He has also reportedly pitched a number of plans to get the best out of Enzo Fernandez, a player who many in West London feel they have not yet seen the best from.

Talk has already begun about which players they are looking to bring in to help the new boss in the best way possible.

However, there is a player already at the club, who is expected to leave this summer, who would actually suit exactly the playstyle that Maresca wants to bring through toStamford Bridge.

Ian Maatsen perfect for Enzo Maresca

Ian Maatsen is getting ready to take part in the Champions League final at the weekend as part of his extremely succesful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

It is believed that the Bundesliga side are going to make a move to sign the Dutchman when their season comes to an end, however it is yet to be seen if they can meet his £35m release clause.

While he has featured as an attacking wing-back for Dortmund, his ability on the ball means he could be the perfect player to invert and help out in midfield.

Maresca big on inverted full-backs

This is a key element of Maresca’s system, and even though Marc Cucurella played the role at the back end of last season, it definitely feels like that role could be upgraded.

While opportunities were few and far between under Pochettino, a new manager could be the key to Maatsen finally making the breakthrough at Stamford Bridge.
