Report: Manchester United on high alert for £17m defender who creates more than Mason Mount, he's ready to move

Manchester United are set to bolster the defence this summer and are on high alert as one target is set for a move.

This past season has seen Manchester United struggle defensively both on the pitch and in the injury department.

Erik ten Hag had to deal with countless injuries with the left back position having no natural options for much of the season.

This was the same at centre-back with several injuries all at once leading to Casemiro being moved back into the backline.

At right-back, options were far better with Diogo Dalot consistently impressive winning the Players’ Player of the Year.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is another option but his future is uncertain with just a year on his contract, and now a possible replacement has been named.

Manchester United have a good chance of signing Giovanni Di Lorenzo

With Wan-Bissaka being linked with a potential £10m move away from Old Trafford to Inter Milan, a replacement has been linked and he’d be a better fit than Wan-Bissaka for possession-based football.

According to a report from TeamTalk, United are on high alert and stands a good chance at bringing in Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

It’s thought that United will battle Aston Villa to sign the right-back who’d be an excellent addition and competition for Dalot.

Recently, Di Lorenzo’s agent explained the situation surrounding the player’s future, as quoted by TeamTalk.

“He doesn’t feel the confidence so yes, Di Lorenzo is ready to leave, we informed the club.

“The president [Aurelio] De Laurentiis is open to selling Giovanni in case of [a] good bid.”

Di Lorenzo would bring a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the squad, along with providing excellent competition for Dalot as the pair possesses similar skills and could easily interchange game by game.

Di Lorenzo would be an excellent addition for Erik ten Hag

Signing Di Lorenzo would be a strong addition and offer United much more in a progressive sense than Wan-Bissaka does.

Di Lorenzo thrives on the ball, which makes him far better suited to the football Ten Hag will be desiring to play, and far more of an actual right back than Jeremie Frimpong, who is more of a winger.

His creativity from right-back is also impressive and over the past year, he’s averaged more shot-creating actions per 90 (3.23) than Mason Mount (2.97), as per FBRef.

The Italian has a market value of just £17m according to CIES and while he turns 31 in August, his qualities are evergreen.

After a season in which several players played far too many minutes, Di Lorenzo would be a top-class addition as an option alongside Dalot.
