'Led to believe': Sheffield Wednesday have now 'made contact' in bid to sign 13-assist gem - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday are eager to sign a former Celtic wonderkid on loan this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to bolster their attack in the next few months, having finished the 2023-24 campaign with the second-lowest goal tally in the Championship.

The Owls’ highest goalscorer was Anthony Musaba with only eight, while no one picked up more than five assists in all competitions.

While the club have already beenlinked with a new striker in the likes of Ike Ugbo and Mika Biereth, they are also looking to bring in a new winger to provide some threat and creativity out wide.

Wednesday are still targeting a free transfer for Ian Poveda, but could look elsewhere to provide more depth.

Sheffield Wednesday have ‘made contact’ over Karamoko Dembele deal

According to journalist Joe Crann, Wednesday are exploring a deal for Stade Brestois attacker Karamoko Dembele.

He wrote on X: “Led to believe that #SWFC have made contact with regards to Karamoko Dembélé as they look to see whether a loan move could be feasible for next season. Had a standout year at Blackpool – no indication yet whether Stade Brestois are open to another exit.”

Dembele was extremely highly-rated as a child, making his debut for the U20s at only 13 years old.

Years later he became Celtic’s youngest first-team player ever at 16 and in October 2019, he was named one of six ‘outstanding young players set to revolutionise the game’ byL’Equipe.

Dembele’s career rapidly went downhill after that though and he managed only nine senior appearances in three years before he was sold to Brest.

The 21-year-old made 18 appearances for the French club but failed to score or provide an assist, until he was then sent out on loan to Blackpool.

Dembele reignited his career at Bloomfield Road, netting eight goals and providing 13 assists in League One.

The youngster was then named the Juniro Seasiders Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Player of the Season.

Would Brest send him back out on loan?

Sheffield Wednesday are now eager to bring Dembele back to England, but it is unclear whether Brest are willing to send him back out on loan again.

The winger’s contract is set to expire in 2026 and Brest could look to offload him permanently to cash in on his recent form.

It is likely that there will be a lot of competition for his signature, so the Owls would have to cough up plenty of cash if they were to refuse a loan deal.

The Ligue 1 club wouldn’t really benefit from sending him out on loan at this stage, so Wednesday could perhaps look to sign him on a loan with an option-to-buy deal if they didn’t want to pay seven figures this summer.
