‘Based on calls I’ve made’: Journalist shares what he’s heard Chelsea’s first signing could be this summer

The Enzo Maresca era at Chelsea is about to begin, and change is afoot at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, it’s not just going to be a new manager in town in west London, there will also be a number of new signings this summer.

Chelsea have work to do on their squad, and according to Sami Mokbel, speaking on The Byline, their first port of call this summer could be to sign a new goalkeeper who is good on the ball.

Chelsea’s first signing could be a new goalkeeper

Mokbel shared what he’s been hearing from his sources about who Chelsea could sign. Claiming that a new goalkeeper could be the first port of call.

“From what I understand today, and I think it was still the case under Mauricio Pochettino, but based on calls I’ve made today one of the first ports of call will be a new goalkeeper who is good with the ball at their feet,” Mokbel said

“Which immediately suggests there will be the implementation of a possession-based style which will allow the goalkeeper to get involved in build-up play out from the back,” Mokbel said.

Chelsea need a goalkeeper

Regardless of whether or not they’re implementing this new possession-based approach or not, Chelsea needed a new goalkeeper this summer.

The Blues couldn’t quite settle on a number one last season with Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez having to share minutes last term.

If there’s one thing all the great teams in Premier League history have in common it’s that they’ve all had top-class goalkeepers who were established as number ones, and Chelsea currently don’t have that.

Who Chelsea sign in this position remains to be seen, but it’s been clear for a little while that they need a new number one next season who can fully establish themselves as a trusted option between the posts.
