‘Would work perfectly’: Danny Murphy says £45m Man City player should join Everton now

Danny Murphy has claimed that joining Everton would be an ideal move for one Manchester City player this summer.

Previous transfer windows have seen a wide variety of players leave the Etihad Stadium to join other English clubs either on loan deals or in permanent transfers.

In terms of players that have left on temporary loan deals, the Blues have seen names such as James McAtee, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Issa Kabore and Josh Wilson-Esbrand join different clubs across the country for the recent season.

Now that another summer transfer period is around the corner, another player on the books at the Manchester club has found himself being linked with a loan move to another top-flight side.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Everton are exploring the possibility of signing Kalvin Phillips on loan from City this summer.

It’s also been claimed that the Citizens are eager to sell the midfielder on a permanent basis, but Everton’s financial situation may only limit them to securing a possible loan deal.

This has since led to one pundit sharing his thoughts on this reported move.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy had this to say when asked if he thinks joining Everton this summer would be a good move for Phillips.

He said: “If you were to say to me, pick somebody you think would get the best out of him, Dyche would be someone I’d say yeah. Work in a disciplined structure, get him fit, strong and get him belief and confidence in himself.

“It actually makes perfect sense from a financial [point of view] because Everton are going to have to sell a few. If they can get half-decent money for either Idrissa Gueye or Onana and then bring Phillips in on loan, win-win.

“Because Phillips is a good footballer, he intelligent, he’s got a bit about him, he’s got a bit of everything, he’s alright.

“The confidence has drained from him, but the best way, the only way really, to get your confidence back is by playing, but to play well you’ve got to be fit and you’ve got to be given a platform with a manager who believes in you.

“[At] West Ham, he had a bad game he was back out, bad half he was back out. I’m not blaming Moyes, Moyes was under pressure and he had to get some results and he had pressure on himself so it maybe wasn’t the right move for him.

“Sean Dyche has got credit in the bank at Everton, he’s kept them up, had a good season with all that’s gone on. Yes, they’re going to have to sell a few but ultimately, I think it would work perfectly.”

Phillips needs a fresh start

Having failed to make an impact at City, who paid £45m to sign the midfielder from Leeds United back in 2022, the Englishman has a rather disappointing loan spell with West Ham in the second half of the latest Premier League campaign, as Murphy mentioned.

With just five starts to his name across the entirety of the recent season in all competitions, it’s easy to see why Murphy thinks a move to Everton would be ideal for him if Phillips gets the chance to play regularly and rebuild his confidence.
