‘One thing’: Carlos Sainz potentially joining nine-time F1 champions in 2025 ‘hard to believe’ – journalist

Carlos Sainz has an important choice to make in the coming weeks and months about his Formula 1 future.

He’s known for months now that he won’t be driving for Ferrari during the 2025 F1 season after being replaced by Lewis Hamilton.

Journalist Diego Mejia was speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast and was reviewing the options on the table for the 29-year-old.

The number of teams who have a seat available for Sainz is beginning to dwindle.

Mercedes have already ruled out moving for the Spaniard and it looks like Red Bull won’t be signing the three-time race winner either despite Sergio Perez’s recent struggles.

It means that teams further down the grid are now hopeful they can pull off a real coup and sign one of the leading drivers in the paddock.

Mejia has now reacted to the news that Carlos Sainz could join Williams in 2025 and finds it hard to believe that he’ll join the British team.

Team principal James Vowles has already secured the future of star driver Alex Albon despite their poor start to the campaign.

If they can bring in Sainz as his teammate, all of a sudden Williams will have one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid.

Carlos Sainz joining Williams in 2025 is ‘hard to believe’

All the attention at the end of the Monaco Grand Prix was on Ferrari and Charles Leclerc as he finally ended the curse at his home race.

It was an emotional sight watching him stand on the top step of the podium with the Monegasque Royal Family standing proudly behind him.

However, there were also celebrations going on further down the grid.

Visa Cash App RB scored another four points through Yuki Tsunoda who has shone in the Red Bull sister car throughout the campaign.

The mood would have been much frostier at Alpine despite Pierre Gasly finishing 10 and earning the French manufacturer an important point.

Meanwhile, Alex Albon finally finished in the top ten and earned Williams their first points of the season, lifting them off the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship above Sauber.

The team had a slow start to the year following teething problems over the winter.

Considering the position Williams are in right now, it’s hard to believe that Sainz is seriously thinking about joining them in 2025.

However, Sainz’s camp have been impressed by their proposal and that might give them the upper hand in the race for his signature over Audi.

Diego Mejia shares his thoughts on Carlos Sainz potentially joining Williams

Speaking about the idea of Sainz going to Williams, Mejia said: “Well, when I first read it, I thought, ‘I find it hard to believe’.

“Especially when you look at Williams and when you look at Sauber when you know that Audi’s coming in and that team is going to change for the good.

“Why [is it] better [to go to] Williams than Audi which is going to be a team basically built around him.

“But then I guess one of the points that the Spanish media was making was back in 2014 when we had the big regulation change for the power units, if you had the right power unit, you were going to be good.

“And if Mercedes does it again, if you have a Mercedes power unit on the back of your chassis, you may be well off for at least the start of the regulation cycle.

“I still find it hard to believe but one thing is for sure, Carlos [Sainz] is on everyone’s list and that’s only going to make him negotiate a very good contract for the coming years.”

Would a move to Williams make sense for Carlos Sainz?

It would be hard to believe if someone told you at the end of last season that Carlos Sainz could join Williams in 2025.

He’s currently sitting 4 in the Drivers’ Championship despite missing the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

However, he’s running out of places he could land on the grid for next year and given how poor their start to the season has been, joining Sauber in their current state won’t be appealing.

Williams aren’t doing much better, but have taken clear strides forward this year even if their upgrades have been delayed at times due to the number of large crashes they’ve had this season.

If Sainz wants a long-term project, then joining Audi might make sense considering they will be a works team on the grid.

However, if he’s looking at the medium term, then Williams – with a Mercedes power unit – appears to be his strongest option.
