‘Incredible’ Liverpool player’s chances of starting at Euro 2024 may have increased after Luke Shaw’s comments

Liverpool may have broken away for the summer, but several of their players will now be getting together with their respective nations.

Those reunions come ahead of Euro 2024, with Germany hosting the tournament, which gets underway in mid-June.

Two Reds men in Andy Robertson and Ben Doak will link up with Scotland in preparation for the competition, with the latter given the perfect chance to impress new boss Arne Slot.

Anfield trio Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo meanwhile will unite with the Netherlands.

There are, however, four Liverpool players involved in the current England setup, with Gareth Southgate calling up Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones to the latest Three Lions camp.

The manager has named a 33-strong group for the friendly clashes with Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland, which he must then cut down to 26 for the Euros.

Joe Gomez sees England starting chances increase

Many players will be given a chance to shine in those two friendlies, one of which is likely to be Liverpool defender Gomez.

He enjoyed a strong campaign for his club at both centre-back and left-back, earning praise from the likes of Jay Spearing, who described Gomez as “incredible.”

The Reds ace faces stiff competition for places in the Three Lions squad, never mind for a starting spot, but his versatility will undoubtedly help his case for regular minutes in Germany.

And his chances of such regular minutes have now increased following the latest update from Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw.

Also included in Southgate’s preliminary squad, the Red Devils man has confirmed that he is not “100% fit” at this moment in time.

“I don’t normally react to things I see on social media but there’s a lot of people questioning my loyalty to this club and asking how I am fit for England but not United,” Shaw posted on Instagram.

“The reality is I am not 100% fit for either right now but I am doing everything I can and constantly working to be.

“I have been at this club for 10 years through highs and lows and for anyone to question my loyalty is obviously frustrating.”

Who will Gareth Southgate play at left-back at Euro 2024?

Several England defenders will be eyeing a starting spot this summer, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi, John Stones and Ezri Konsa perhaps leading the way in terms of centre-backs.

At right-back, Southgate can call upon Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker, with Lewis Dunk, Jarrad Branthwaite and Quansah completing his current defensive options.

Gomez has, however, proven that he can operate both centrally and at left back, with that latter role potentially going his way.

Newcastle United full-back Trippier does, however, represent another option in that area, while there is of course still the presence of Alexander-Arnold, who has been listed as a midfielder.
