'See you soon': Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl's message to Barcelona manager and 'mentor' Hansi Flick

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has sent a message to the new Barcelona manager, Hansi Flick.

Barcelona have been searching for their next manager after the Catalan giants recently parted ways with club legend Xavi.

Flick takes charge after nine months out of the game, following his Bayern Munich exit in September 2023.

He arrives at the Camp Nou with plenty of experience with the likes of Victoria Bammental, 1899 Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich, and the German national team.

Danny Rohl was Flick’s no.2 with Bayern and then in the German national set up. Flick visited long-term friend and apprentice Rohl earlier this year, watching Sheffield Wednesday beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in the Championship.

Rohl took to Instagram after the announcement that Barcelona had hired Flick on a two-year deal, posting:

The first thing that might come to mind for many Sheffield Wednesday fans is the possibility of their team getting some loan players from Barcelona.

It may seem like a hopeful suggestion on the surface, but it’s something that happens in football often; managers and clubs lending players to coaches they know will mould them into the style they want.

Wayne Rooney at Derby County for example, he had several players on loan from Manchester United.

With Rohl though, it may be much different. He’s worked with Flick for a long time and he will have learned a lot of what he now knows from Flick himself.

And it would be safe to say that Rohl and Flick have very similar playing styles and mentalities, and similar training styles too.

So Barcelona sending some youngsters, most likely from their B team, to Sheffield Wednesday on loan makes sense for Flick because he knows that they’ll be playing and training in a way similar to what he’d deploy at Barcelona.

That, and they’d be getting some valuable first-team experience. So Flick to Barcelona could have some very positive knock-on effects for the Owls going forward.

But clubs often make decisions on players they want to loan out late in the summer, and Sheffield Wednesday have bigger transfer priorities right now, so we may not see any rumours of Barcelona loanees heading to S6 for some time yet.
