'Downhill': ESPN pundit is convinced £34m Liverpool player will get worse under Arne Slot next season

Liverpool have been told that one of their players will begin to get worse in the Arne Slot era.

The Reds are all set to begin a new journey. Jurgen Klopp has left the club and Slot has been brought in to fill the German’s shoes at Anfield.

The Dutchman will have quite a few decisions to make in the coming months, and ESPN pundit Craig Burley has given Slot some advice over one Liverpool player.

ESPN pundit makes bold claim about Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah

Liverpool signed Mohamed Salah in 2017 for £34 million (Sky Sports), and he has been an absolute superstar since.

The Egyptian has been the Reds’ best player in almost every season he has been at the club. He is one of the biggest reasons why they were so successful under Klopp.

Now, Liverpool are beginning a new era under Slot, and the Dutchman would love nothing more than to have a player like Salah in his squad who would score over 30 goals a season.

However, after Steve Nicol claimed Salah would be on top of Liverpool’s list to sell this summer, Burley made a claim about his own about his performances in the Slot era.

The ESPN pundit believes Salah has reached the stage of his career where he can no longer improve. He feels that the former Chelsea man will only go downhill from this point.

So, Burley has urged Liverpool to cash in on him this summer.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Burley said: “You sense that when you’re Liverpool, if a fairly big money comes along (for Salah), you absolutely snap it up.

“Because that’s only going one way now isn’t it, Salah? It’s only going one way – downhill. Unless he’s a freak of Mother Nature, the numbers are going to go downhill.

“So, if Liverpool are sensible, you take the money, you let him go off and get his payday, and the manager moves on with maybe a new signing or just different personnel.”

Do stats justify Craig Burley’s comments?

Mohamed Salah has been absolutely unbelievable for Liverpool over the years.

The 31-year-old has consistently caused problems for opposition defenders, and the Reds are more dangerous when he’s in the side.

Burley seems convinced that Salah’s numbers will only go downhill from now, but do the Egyptian’s stats back that claim?

Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, it does.

In the 2021/22 season, Salah scored 31 goals for the Reds. In the following campaign, he managed one less – 30. That number dropped down to 25 in the 2023/24 season.

A lot of factors have led to Salah’s drop in output, but his stats clearly show that his numbers are going downhill.

Perhaps Burley is right and Liverpool should cash in on Salah before his contract runs out in 2025.
