‘Huge loss’: Sky journalist says Chelsea will sell ‘world class’ player for way less than they paid for him

Chelsea need to sell a few players this summer.

The Blues are up against it in terms of Profit and Sustainability rules, and they need to finalise a few departures in order to balance the books.

The likes of Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah have been linked with departures, but before any of those players leave, there’s one huge name who needs to be offloaded.

Indeed, Romelu Lukaku, remarkably, is still a Chelsea player, and this summer, the Blues will be looking to sanction a permanent departure for the Belgian.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Transfer Talk Podcast, Dharmesh Sheth has been discussing Lukaku’s future, and he says that the striker could be sold for a huge loss this summer as Chelsea are likely to ask for around £40m for the player.

Chelsea ready to sell Lukaku for substantial loss

Sheth spoke about the ‘world class’ striker and his future.

“There are 50 senior players at Chelsea, 21 of those were on loan last season. Think of some of the ones that are coming back, in inverted commas, who they will sell, look at the money they could get. Romelu Lukaku is coming back, I think they’re asking for between £35m-40m for him, that is a huge loss to what they paid, but that’s still £35-40m,” Sheth said.

Lukaku may not be worth it

Chelsea want £40m for Lukaku, but the reality is that they may not get such a fee for the Belgian.

A 31-year-old who has scored 31 league goals in his last three seasons doesn’t represent great value at £40m these days.

Yes, Lukaku has an incredible back catalogue of solid performances for numerous clubs, but now, he’s 31 years old and he’s seemingly over the hill.

Of course, with the Saudi Arabian market always looking for stars, Chelsea may be able to find a team willing to pay such a fee for Lukaku, but from the outside looking in, £40m doesn’t appear to be good value for the striker.
