Player Forest sold in January has just been released by his new club after just nine games

Nottingham Forest allowed George Shelvey to leave the City Ground in the summer – but now he’s facing limbo once again.

The young stopper played in a number of friendlies during pre-season with Steve Cooper keen to look at him.

WithDean Henderson and Keylor Navas leaving at the end of their loan deals, Forest sought high and low for a new goalkeeper.

Matt Turner didn’t arrive until three days before the Premier League season got underway, with Odysseas Vlachodimos arriving on deadline day.

That threw Shelvey a lifeline and he played in the vast majority of friendly games that Forest played in the summer.

In January, he was allowed to leave the club on a permanent basis, with Forest adding Matz Sels to their ranks.

Now, the 23-year-old is facing limbo once again as Dundalk have made a decision on his future.

George Shelvey released by Dundalk after nine games

This is somewhat surprising but Dundalk have been left less than impressed.

In Shelvey’s ninth game for the League of Ireland outfit he was sent off for giving foul and abusive language to the referee.

The investigation into the language used by Shelvey resulted in the former Forest man getting a 10-match ban.

Now, in a statement on the club’s official website, it’s been confirmed that Shelvey has mutually agreed to terminate his contract with the club.

The player is once again a free agent and it will be interesting to see who picks him up this summer.

Shelvey deserves chance to revive career

In our view, this is a bit of a shame that Dundalk have taken this stance.

Shelvey came through the Forest ranks but never made a first-team appearance and this transfer was a good chance for him.

In the heat of the moment, he’s said something untoward to a referee and he will undoubtedly regret his actions.

However, he’s not the first – and he won’t be the last – to be sent off for foul and abusive language and he will hopefully learn from this.

It’s not clear what the nature of the language used was but on the back of this news, it must have been pretty alarming.

Still, we hope that there is a club out there willing to help Shelvey learn from his actions and get his football career back on the right track.
