The Celtic goalkeeper situation in focus as one reported target scored off the list

Celtic have a dilemma on their hands as Brendan Rodgers weighs up options to replace Joe Hart at Parkhead.

Finishing his career with seven trophies in Glasgow, Hart has now retired from football and the hunt is ongoing for his successor.

According to various sources, Burnley’s Arijanet Muric, Aston Villa stopper Viljami Sinisalo and Southampton’s Alex McCarthy have been mentioned as potential alternatives.

Wolfsburg’s Koen Casteels is another name mentioned in the discussion as he prepares to leave the Bundesliga outfit after nine years between the sticks.

Available on a free transfer, the Belgium international also attracted interest from Jupiler Pro League giants Anderlecht over a return to his homeland.

Now, a fresh development has shed light on his situation amid Celtic’s hunt for a new goalkeeper ahead of pre-season.

Koen Casteels is set to seal a move to Al-Qasdiah

According to HLN, Casteels is set to join Saudi Pro League outfit Al Qasdiah, who have just won promotion to the top flight from the second tier.

Despite Anderlecht’s advances, the 31-year-old is believed to have become a financially unviable target after they missed out on qualification for the Champions League.

Crucially, this means Celtic will also miss out on the experienced stopper, and they may be forced to turn their attention elsewhere in their quest for a new number one.

Unfortunately, the riches that life as a footballer in the Gulf region can offer have proved too hard to ignore for Casteels, meaning he won’t be turning out at Parkhead.

Plenty of other goalkeepers will be on Rodgers’ list, and it is set to be an intriguing few weeks as the Bhoys look to secure Hart’s replacement before pre-season begins at Lennoxtown.
