Unai Emery told the ‘most replaceable’ part of Aston Villa squad amid growing PSR fears

Aston Villa could be met with PSR concerns in the summer transfer window, with Unai Emery now advised of where the most replaceable area of his squad may be.

For all of Aston Villa’s successes over the 2023/24 campaign, Unai Emery is expected to be met with financial restrictions in the summer transfer window.

PSR concerns have been raised despite the millions that Villa will be rewarded for finishing fourth in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League, as the club sports one of the highest wages-to-turnover ratios in the league.

As a result, The Athletic detailed that Villa may find themselves in a sell-to-buy scenario this summer, making it crucial that Monchi and Emery recruit wisely in the transfer window.

While it would be preferable that Villa’s favoured XI from 2023/24 isn’t touched ahead of next season to ensure progression, something must give in order for high-quality assets to arrive at Villa Park.

It will be an interesting summer for both Emery and Monchi, who have now been advised of what area could generate profit without causing a detrimental impact on the squad.

Unai Emery told that Aston Villa’s midfield is replaceable this summer

The likes of Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez would expectedly hand Villa the most profit however, there is no chance that Emery would be placed in a scenario that would deem their sales acceptable.

Talking theoretically on the Claret and Blue podcast about who Villa could part ways with for profit this summer, journalist Sam Tighe was prompted to answer the question of whether £65m would be a viable fee to part ways with Douglas Luiz.

“I would decline £65m for Konsa, Martinez, for Watkins, I think they’re very very difficult, nigh on impossible to replace.

“I actually think that a creative central midfielder, as much as we all love him, is the most replaceable part of the team.

“Take the £65m, put £30m on the table for Carlos Soler, just because has been linked with Villa recently, and you’ve more or less made him up again.”

Carlos Soler is one of many players that Villa have already been linked to ahead of the transfer window, as Tighe highlighted the midfield as being the most flexible element of Villa’s current squad.

Douglas Luiz could be crucial to solving Aston Villa’s PSR concerns

Though speaking hypothetically, Tighe’s view on Luiz’s future makes a lot of sense considering the other sellable assets in Villa’s midfield.

Boubacar Kamara is still recovering from an ACL injury so will not be ready for action until the 2024/25 season is underway, John McGinn is club captain and Youri Tielemans was acquired only last summer, making Luiz the obvious pick to be axed.

As well as striking out the other players in the replaceable position, the Brazilian is a desired target for the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, suggesting that a high sale fee could be generated if interest heats up.

With all elements in mind, the idea of seeing Luiz walk would pain many, given his growth at Villa over the years and what he can offer Emery on his day however, PSR concerns must be solved this summer if new faces are to arrive.
