‘Always’: Wayne Rooney names Chelsea legend as his toughest ever opponent in football

Former Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney was very certain when he was asked recently who his toughest opponent of all time was.

In a time where Chelsea prepare for a new era under a new manager again in the form of Enzo Maresca, Rooney himself is preparing to return to the game in the role of boss at Plymouth Argyle.

The former striker clearly has plenty of experience at the top of the game, and has faced some of the best defenders and midfielders that have ever been produced.

However, it is a Stamford Bridge icon who he named his toughest opponent ever.

Rooney names John Terry as toughest opponent

He said to The Overlap: “I would say John Terry. You always think you can do him for pace but he’d put himself in good positions. He was obviously physical, strong, good in the air. I think John Terry was probably the most difficult.

Terry has been working in and around the club in recent months, particularly spending his time with the academy process.

He has remained well informed with the first team process, and said last month that he would actually like to see Conor Gallagher named as the permanent first team captain at Stamford Bridge.

Anything like that would of course rely on the England international being kept at the club, with all the reports stating he is still up for sale at the right price.

It is likely that his role at the club was something that Mauricio Pochettino was big on when he held talks with the ownership at the end of the season, however his dismissal suggests that they did not see eye to eye on everything that was discussed.

It remains to be seen if Maresca has any say in the future of Gallagher, with him entering the final year on his contract.
