‘I want to see’: Wayne Rooney shares where he thinks Phil Foden should actually play now

Wayne Rooney has shared where he thinks Manchester City star Phil Foden should play in the England team for the upcoming European Championships.

After helping his side win their sixth Premier League title in seven years, Foden will likely be a part of the England squad for the Euros in Germany.

Looking ahead to the tournament, which kicks off on June 14 with the hosts Germany taking on Scotland in their first group game, one pundit and former Premier League and England star has shared his views on the City player and what position he should be playing over the summer.

Speaking in a recent edition of The Overlap, Rooney had this to say when asked by Gary Neville who he thinks should play on the left for England during the upcoming tournament in Germany.

He said: “I don’t know. I think it depends on the game as well because I want to see Foden more central, I think it’s his best position.”

Having appeared in 53 games for City throughout the season, the 24-year-old featured in numerous positions across the attack and midfield.

Specifically, the Englishman played on the right-wing 21 times, on the left-wing 10 times and as a central attacking-midfielder on 15 occasions.

However, despite those numbers, Foden played with a fluidity and versatility that saw him feature in all of these positions at certain times in individual games.

Foden should be a key figure for England this summer

Across his 53 games, the England international scored 27 goals and delivered 12 assists, which highlights just how dangerous he can be when he’s on the pitch.

After recently being voted the Etihad Player of the Season, Foden had this to say about playing centrally this season.

He said: Moving into the centre has helped my game come on loads, I can get on the ball and influence it more. Some of that I’ve enjoyed a lot and that’s where I see myself, hopefully in the future, playing there more.”

Having proved himself to be a very influential player for his side from a central role this season, we feel that there should be no doubts about playing him in that role for England in the Euros.
