Spurs defender now shares brutally honest assessment of Aston Villa star Emi Martinez

Spurs defender Cuti Romero has shared his thoughts on his international teammate and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

The 2023/24 season proved just how important Emi Martinez is to Aston Villa, as the world’s number one guided the Villans to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

The ever-charismatic Argentine played 34 games out of 38 in the Premier League for Villa, with the goalkeeper’s quality and presence sorely missed when he was not available.

Unai Emery’s side faced four fixtures in the league without their famed shot-stopper, resulting in the Midlands club taking home just three from a possible 12 points, winning one of four and conceding an eye-watering 11 goals.

Fortunately, Martinez was on hand to provide Villa with some standout moments over the season, including his penalty shootout antics against LOSC Lille in the Europa Conference League.

The Lille supporters that night weren’t the only figures from the 2023/24 campaign that didn’t appreciate the spectacle that is the Villa superstar, as Spurs defender Cristian Romero shared his experience of facing his compatriot.

What Spurs defender Cristian Romero really thinks of Emi Martinez

Preparing for international duty with Argentina ahead of the Copa America, which kicks off at the end of June, Romero shared his honest assessment of Martinez when speaking to Ole.

The Spurs centre-back admitted that his teammate is ‘unbearable’ to play against, but went on to dub the Villa sensation the world’s best.

“Dibu is a moron, he is unbearable as a rival. He is in his best moment, we enjoy it as Argentines.

“Being a person who came from below and today he is the best goalkeeper in the world, it is beautiful to see him there. He is also a great person.”

Romero’s assessment of Martinez is fair after Villa’s 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the 2023/24 campaign, with the goalkeeper being a nightmare for opponents throughout the season.

Emi Martinez is set for a busy summer

The Spurs centre-back will have to become re-accustomed to dealing with the ‘unbearable’ ways of Martinez, as the duo will spend the summer together at the Copa America.

Argentina’s campaign begins on the 21st of June against Canada, where the World Champions will hope to defend the trophy they claimed back in 2020.

If Martinez’s nation is to reach the final, the Villa ‘keeper will be in action up until the 15th of July before reporting back for pre-season.

Considering that Villa’s pre-season tour of the United States kicks off on the 27th of July, it would be likely that the goalkeeper will miss such festivities, particularly if Argentina go all the way in the Copa America.

The most important thing is for Martinez to enjoy a successful summer of international action before being delivered back safely to Villa, who will be joyed to have their prized asset back.
