Report: PL club now makes move to stop Newcastle United signing their 'complete' player this summer

Newcastle United’s plans to replace Callum Wilson may have just taken a hit.

The 32-year-old striker is facing an uncertain future this summer, despite Eddie Howe being keen to keep him at St James’ Park.

However, the hierarchy believe it is time to cash in on the number nine, and it is deemed likely that Callum Wilson will leave Newcastle United in the coming months.

Newcastle interested in Everton forward to replace Callum Wilson

If Wilson does go, the Magpies will need to bring in a replacement. And one player who has been identified for the role is Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Everton forward, who was called a ‘complete striker‘ by Carlo Ancelotti in 2020, is once again on Newcastle’s radar, and is seen as a player who Eddie Howe can get more out of.

On top of that, his contract at Goodison Park expires in 2025. That means the Toffees either need to sell him now or extend his contract, which could give Howe the chance to grab a bargain.

Everton open contract talks with Calvert-Lewin

However, Everton are now taking steps to go down the other route.

That is according to the Athletic, who report that Everton officials have now opened talks with Calvert-Lewin over extending his contract.

Sean Dyche’s side obviously want to retain the services of the 27-year-old, and the beginning of these negotiations could be bad news for Newcastle.

That is a blow to Newcastle’s striker plans this summer

If Calvert-Lewin does sign a new Everton contract, that should totally end Newcastle’s interest in him. The only way they will remain keen is if a new deal includes an affordable release clause that can get him out of Goodison Park.

If not, a deal for Calvert-Lewin is not going to make financial sense. Hypothetically, you would imagine he cost between £20million and £25million right now as he heads into the final year of his contract. But if he signs an extension, Everton will be better placed to command a bigger fee.

The bigger the fee, the less appealing the England international is.

That is why these talks are a blow, as Newcastle are not ready to move for a player like Calvert-Lewin yet. They need to decide what is happening with Wilson first, as Toon officials ponder selling him after four years on Tyneside.

But while they continue to debate his future, they could be missing out on his ideal replacement. That might mean Newcastle lean towards keeping Wilson, or they will need to find an alternative to Calvert-Lewin.

Of course, there no guarantees that Calvert-Lewin will sign a new contract, but the fact that discussions have started is a major step towards that conclusion.
